The Edmonton Oilers, eager to get back on track, host the Carolina
Hurricanes Tuesday night at Rexall Place.
Justin Faulk Hurricanes Jersey . The Oilers
have been idle since a 2-1 overtime setback to the Calgary Flames on Saturday.
Edmonton salvaged a point and prevented a shutout loss of its own when
Taylor Hall scored with 10.3 seconds left in regulation. Devan Dubnyk was solid
with 25 saves before giving up the winning tally 3:14 into overtime. Edmonton,
which was coming off an 8-2 win over Colorado, fell to 1-1-1 on a five-game
homestand. The Oilers and Canes have split their last six meetings in Edmonton.
Carolina picked up a 5-3 victory in the most recent encounter there on Dec. 7,
2011, its second straight win in the series. Dubnyk is 0-1-0 with a 4.34 GAA in
two previous meetings with the Hurricanes, including one start. The Hurricanes
opened up a four-game swing on Monday night in Vancouver and were blanked 2-0 by
the Canucks and backup goaltender Eddie Lack, who made 31 saves in his first
career shutout. Carolina backup Justin Peters gave up one goal and finished with
24 saves for the Hurricanes, who had a season-high, three-game win streak
snapped. "I think as a team we deserved a better fate," said Peters. "We played
the right way, we had some chances. Just give credit to their team and Lack was
playing well." Carolina was shut out for the second time this season and for the
first time since a 3-0 setback at home to Tampa Bay on Nov. 1. The zero-goal
effort came on the same day that Canes forward Jeff Skinner was named the NHLs
First Star for last week. Skinner was coming off a week-long span in which he
led the league with five goals and added an assist. No. 1 netminder Cam Ward
should get the start tonight for the Hurricanes and is 3-3-0 with a 2.53 goals
against average in six previous meetings. "It was nice to score that goal late.
It was a huge rush and a boost for the team to send it into overtime," said
Hall, who was named the leagues Second Star for last week on Monday after
notching four goals and two assists.
Jay McClement Jersey . 3 seed Phillip
Kohlschreiber from Germany. Defending champion Marin Cilic also reached the
semifinals -- his fourth in Zagreb -- defeating fellow Croat Ivan Dodig. German
qualifier Bjorn Phau beat Dudi Sela of Israel to reach his first semifinals in
nearly five years.
Cam Ward Jersey .B. -- Canadas Rachel Homan
opened the Ford Womens World Curling Championship with a 7-5 win over Russia on
Saturday.BRASILIA, Brazil - Canada had to wait until the 83rd minute of its
match against Scotland before scoring a goal. But luckily for the Canadian
squad, one goal was all it needed. Winnipegs Sophie Schmidt scored the winner
off a Diana Matheson corner kick to seal Canadas third-place spot in the Torneio
Internacional de Futebol Feminino in Brazil on Sunday. "Its probably one of my
goals to become a more prolific goalscorer so Ive got to keep that mentality
moving forward, especially when the likes of Christine Sinclair and Adriana Leon
arent putting the ball in the back of the net," Schmidt said. "Weve got to get
that support from that midfield unit so I want to keep scoring more often." A
young Canadian team consisting of 15-year-old Jessie Fleming, 16-year-old Sura
Yekka, 18-year-old Kadeisha Buchanan, and the 21-year-old Leon looked
comfortable throughout the match, aside from a few Scotland chances which
included a near miss when their opponent hit thhe crossbar early in the second
half.
Eddie Lack Jersey. Head coach John Herdman
says he was impressed with the talent shown by his young team. "In todays game,
we played with a 15, 16, and 18-year-old on the pitch and a 21-year-old all at
the same time. So if you talk about the future I think things bode well," said
Herdman. "Its going to be great for the future. I was very impressed with Jessie
Fleming today and her composure in her (full) debut." Leon and Sinclair scored
in Canadas 2-0 victory over Scotland in the tournament opener on Dec. 12. The
Canadians then lost to Chile 1-0 on Dec. 15 and earned a 0-0 draw with host
Brazil on Dec. 18. That loss and draw sent Canada to a rematch with Scotland for
third place. "The girls deserved to get something out of that today and they
did," Herdman said. "Its just about resilience, persistence to keep going, and I
think we should have had it sewn up by halftime to be honest."
