Atlanta Falcons2016 record: 8-5 | Week 14 ranking: 10The offense continues to light it up, but Vic Beasley Jr. has been lighting up opposing quarterbacks for the Falcons this season. Beasley has 13.5 sacks, tied for most in the NFL, and six forced fumbles (most in the NFL), and could pad those stats against Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers this Sunday.7. Seattle Seahawks2016 record: 8-4-1 | Week 14 ranking: 4Russell Wilson lost by more than 10 points for the first time in his career Sunday, thanks to a career-high five interceptions. Wilson now has two touchdowns and eight interceptions his past three games, and this week he plays a team he has lost three straight against: the Rams.8. Pittsburgh Steelers2016 record: 8-5 | Week 14 ranking: 5Since his return from suspension, LeVeon Bell has accounted for about 58 percent of the Steelers touches (rushes and receptions) and 43 percent of the Steelers yards from scrimmage. Bell looks to rack up more offense this week against the Bengals, the team that ended his 2015 campaign.9. Detroit Lions2016 record: 9-4 | Week 14 ranking: 8The Lions have won five straight and eight of their past nine. During the five-game winning streak, the defense has allowed 15.6 points per game. If the defense can keep it up, especially against the Giants this week, it will help the Lions compensate for QB Matthew Staffords injured finger.10. Tampa Bay Buccaneers2016 record: 8-5 | Week 14 ranking: 12Jameis Winstons sophomore success has been a great story, but the Buccaneers have forced 25 turnovers this season, tied for most in the NFL. Tampas defense will look to disrupt the host Cowboys on Sunday night.11. Green Bay Packers2016 record: 7-6 | Week 14 ranking: 11The Packers are 3-0 since QB Aaron Rodgers said the team could run the table. Rodgers has been great during the stretch (73.9 completion percentage, 7-0 TD-INT), but give credit to the defense too. The defensive unit has allowed an average of 12.0 points per game the past three weeks, and will look to stifle a lackluster Bears offense in Week 15.12. Baltimore Ravens2016 record: 7-6 | Week 14 ranking: 6Joe Flacco is averaging a career-high 42 passes per game this season, and the Ravens are averaging 86.0 rushing yards per game, second fewest in team history. Its not the balance that brought the Ravens their most success, but it has them in the hunt. The Ravens look to balance things out against the Eagles on Sunday.13. Denver Broncos2016 record: 8-5 | Week 14 ranking: 9The Broncos are not only in real danger of missing the playoffs following their loss to the Titans, but also of losing out. Their next three games are against the Patriots, Chiefs and Raiders, teams who are a combined 30-8 this season. Good luck, champs.14. Washington Redskins2016 record: 7-5-1 | Week 14 ranking: 13When the Redskins run well, they win. They are 5-1-1 this season when topping 100 yards rushing and 2-4 when they dont. The Redskins take on the Panthers in Week 15, who have allowed the fifth-fewest rushing yards this season (90.2 per game).15. Minnesota Vikings2016 record: 7-6 | Week 14 ranking: 15Did you know? Sam Bradford has completed at least 70 percent of his passes in six straight games, something only Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and Joe Montana have done since the AFL-NFL merger. The Vikings are 2-4 in those games. Can Bradford keep it going against the Colts in Week 15?16. Tennessee Titans2016 record: 7-6 | Week 14 ranking: 19Marcus Mariota went 6-of-20 in Sundays win, but the Titans defense showed it can win games too. Brian Orakpo (10.0) and Derrick Morgan (9.0) each had a sack Sunday, and are the only pair of teammates with at least 9.0 sacks each this season. Theyll be chasing after QB Alex Smith at Kansas City this week.17. Houston Texans2016 record: 7-6 | Week 14 ranking: 22The Texans are 4-0 in division games this season, one of three teams undefeated in division play, which gives them a nice leg up in the AFC South race. Another division foe in the Jaguars awaits them Sunday.18. Miami Dolphins2016 record: 8-5 | Week 14 ranking: 16Ryan Tannehills season could be over, but dont write off the Dolphins just yet. Matt Moore is 13-12 in his career as a starter (.520 winning percentage), which is a better record than Tannehill (.481). Moores last start and win were against the Dolphins Week 15 opponent: the Jets.19. Arizona Cardinals2016 record: 5-7-1 | Week 14 ranking: 17The Cardinals keep digging themselves holes they cant crawl out of. The Cardinals have been outscored by 42 points in the first and third quarters this season, but have outscored opponents by 64 in the second and fourth quarters. Arizona looks to buck that trend in their home finale against the Saints.20. Cincinnati Bengals2016 record: 5-7-1 | Week 14 ranking: 24The Bengals have their first winning streak of the season! Thats two straight wins for Cincy, and two straight games in which they allowed zero points in the first half. That might be tougher to do against the Steelers this week than against the Eagles and Browns though.21. San Diego Chargers2016 record: 5-8 | Week 14 ranking: 21Melvin Gordon and Joey Bosa were both hurt Sunday, and hopefully neither is serious. The Chargers injured reserve is currently 17 players deep, so the team could use some good news on Gordon and Bosa. Whats left of the Chargers will host the Raiders this Sunday.22. Carolina Panthers2016 record: 5-8 | Week 14 ranking: 23QB Cam Newton has completed 43.0 percent of his passes the past four weeks, but the Panthers are 2-2 in that stretch and averaging a respectable 22.5 points per game. Imagine what the Panthers could be doing with Newton playing at even an average level. Carolina heads to Washington for Monday Night Football in Week 15.23. New Orleans Saints2016 record: 5-8 | Week 14 ranking: 26Drew Brees has thrown no touchdowns and three interceptions in each of his past two games, the first quarterback to do so in back-to-back games since Tyler Palko in 2011. No quarterback has done it in three straight, so expect a better day for Brees against the Cardinals in Week 15.24. Indianapolis Colts2016 record: 6-7 | Week 14 ranking: 25Here are the Colts points scored their past three games: 7, 41, 17. Granted the seven-point effort was without Andrew Luck, but still, the Colts cant seem to string together consecutive strong efforts, and it has them sitting at 6-7 and on the outside looking in. Road games at Minnesota and Oakland the next two weeks could decide their season.25. Buffalo Bills2016 record: 6-7 | Week 14 ranking: 18The Bills have allowed 28.3 points per game since Week 7, third most in the NFL in that time, besting only the Browns and 49ers. The Bills fixed the offense by firing their offensive coordinator, which means the defense-minded Ryan brothers could be next. If the Bills give the Browns their first win this week, that could happen sooner rather than later.26. New York Jets2016 record: 4-9 | Week 14 ranking: 29Bryce Petty just led the largest road comeback in Jets history. Seriously. Dont get too excited though. The Jets past two wins have come against the Browns (0-13) and 49ers (1-12). The Dolphins, Patriots and Bills remain on the Jets schedule.27. Philadelphia Eagles2016 record: 5-8 | Week 14 ranking: 20Carson Wentz is on pace to throw 613 passes this season, which would be an Eagles franchise record. Having a rookie throw that much is not a recipe for success, and with four straight losses, it obviously hasnt been. The Eagles head to Baltimore in Week 15.28. Chicago Bears2016 record: 3-10 | Week 14 ranking: 28The Bears might not be winning every week, but theyre hanging in there. They have five losses by six or fewer points, including each of their past two losses. The Bears will have their hands full with the Packers this week.29. San Francisco 49ers2016 record: 1-12 | Week 14 ranking: 31Colin Kaepernick has failed to complete 50 percent of his passes in seven of the eight second halves he has played in this season. He has a 71.7 completion percentage in first halves this season, but his post-halftime struggles arent helping the 49ers.30. Los Angeles Rams2016 record: 4-9 | Week 14 ranking: 27The Rams defense was the teams saving grace early on this season, allowing the fifth-fewest points per game through Week 11. Since then, the Rams have allowed a league-worst 39.0 points per game. The Rams held the Seahawks to a field goal the last time they played, but will that happen again this week?31. Jacksonville Jaguars2016 record: 2-11 | Week 14 ranking: 30The Jaguars have held a lead on only 11.7 percent of their offensive plays this season. Thats worse than the 0-13 Browns (13.2 percent) and the 1-12 49ers (21.1 percent). Can the Jags hold a lead against the Texans on Sunday?32. Cleveland Browns2016 record: 0-13 | Week 14 ranking: 32This edition of the Power Rankings runs on Dec. 13. That will mark the one-year anniversary of the Browns last win, a 24-10 victory over the 49ers with Johnny Manziel starting at QB. The Browns have lost 16 straight since, and look to avoid 17 straight in Buffalo this week. Mike Tauchman Jersey . So with the help of salary-cap guru/godfather Larry Coon, heres a simpler way to learn some of the new rules and how they can affect your favorite team or player.Q: Whats the most important new rule? A: The NBA wants to slow down or even stop superstar players from leaving their teams in free agency. Since 2010, theres been a steady stream of huge names who have left as free agents, including?LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Dwight Howard?and Kevin Durant. Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Kevin Love also forced trades because they knew their teams were afraid theyd leave in free agency.The league created a huge incentive for a select -- and we really do mean select -- group of franchise players to stay put. When Durant left the Oklahoma City Thunder?last summer, the amount the Thunder and the Warriors could pay him was reasonably close over the first four years of a contract. The new rules will change that and give the home team a much larger advantage.Q: Why would the players agree? Dont they want to be able to leave in free agency? A: Because money. Thats going to be a recurring theme here. The owners have agreed to increase the money players can get across the board. A good example is Stephen Curry. He is going to be a free agent next summer and under this new rule, the Warriors can pay him $209 million over five years. It could start at $36 million next year, which would be a record annual salary.If he wanted to sign with another team, he could still get $133 million over four years. The starting salary for him on the max contract would be $30 million. Thats a $76 million difference. 76 MILLION! What do you think Curry is going to do with that sort of economic option? Sorry, Charlotte, your dreams of Steph coming home will probably have to wait for, oh, about five years -- at least.Last year Durant was offered the same $26.5 million starting salary by all the teams that pitched him. Thats why this is being called the Kevin Durant rule. Its a big difference.Q: You said it was a select group of players, so who do you mean? A: To get this type of premium deal you have to have played eight or nine years in the league and been on the All-NBA team this year or in two of the past three years, win the Defensive Player of the Year or have won the MVP in one of the past three years. You also have to re-sign with the team you played for since your rookie contract, although players traded during their rookie contracts still qualify. Thats not a lot of players.This might affect free agents like Curry and Blake Griffin this coming summer and perhaps players like Paul George and DeMarcus Cousins?in 2018. Its a small group, but these are important players to their teams, and this time frame has been when most of the megastars have been leaving their teams. Also, the new rules mean superstars who meet these criteria can be offered extensions and the promise of this huge money before they even become free agents.The life cycle of an NBA superstar will now look like this: After being drafted, he signs a four-year rookie contract. Before that contract ends he signs a four or five-year extension. Before that contract ends he signs a five-year extension. A superstar who wants to maximize his salary may not hit the open market until hes played 14 seasons in the league.Q: So should Karl-Anthony Towns just buy a house in Minneapolis and assume hes there forever? A: If youre a Wolves fan, that idea probably has you smiling. Its possible it could result in such a scenario with a star like Towns. But it also could lead to an unwanted side effect: young stars trying to force trades within their first four years in the league. That could happen for sure.Q: What if you haave multiple stars like the Warriors? A: You can do this for two players on your roster. Greg Bird Jersey. So if youre lucky enough to have two, you can keep them both.But the rules unofficial namesake, Kevin Durant, wont qualify with the Warriors because hes changed teams already. But Curry and either Klay Thompson or Draymond Green should be locks.Q: So it feels like the Thunder got a pretty bad break. If these rules were around last year they mightve been able to keep Durant and then also sign Westbrook and keep them both long term, right? A: Yep, its a major bummer for OKC. Theyve gotten pretty unlucky in how the rules have applied to them. To make it worse, they wont even have the new advantages when Westbrook can become a free agent in 2018 because hell have played 10 years and other teams can offer him the same starting salary. Had the Thunder known this, they might not have signed him to an extension last summer when Durant left. Like I said, its a major bummer.Q: So will stars stop leaving in free agency? Dont you love the excitement of free agency in July? A: The owners of most teams dont. This will probably slow the trend of big names changing teams. But its hard to qualify for this, so it wont apply to that many players.Q: Did any other players get raises? A: Everybody got them. The players who get the least money, the guys on minimum contracts, got a 45 percent raise. So did all the players on rookie contracts, although their bumps are being phased in over three years. The players who were drafted over the past few years will get their salaries automatically boosted next year, too. That way they dont get penalized when the rookies in 2017 get the new salaries. Other mechanisms were built in to help middle-class players get more money. The mid-level exceptions were bumped by 45 percent starting next season, too.Q: Did the old guys get anything? A: Oh, yes. If youve been in the league at least 10 years, your minimum salary will now be $2.3 million, up from $1.4 million. And players like James, Paul, Anthony and Wade will really benefit because of a rule tweak. It used to be that you couldnt have a four or five-year contract if you turned 36 years old during the deal. Now that age limit has been increased to 38.Q: What does that mean for Pauls free agency in 2017? A: It means he can ask the Clippers for $50 million more than he could have if he had been a free agent last year. The Clippers dont have to give it to him, of course, but he is in a much better position to get a lot more guaranteed money. Being the union president?can pay off .Q: What about the guys in the middle? A: NBA salaries are a zero-sum game: They get 51 percent of the revenue pie to split up among 450 or so players. So if the guys at the top are getting more, and the guys at the bottom are getting more, it means the middle class might get squeezed. This could be the beginning of a very top-heavy league, where the stars get the lions share of the money. Some would say thats how it should be because stars drive the league. Others would say thats what happens when the union leaders are mostly superstars. Paul, James, Anthony and Curry are on the eight-person executive committee.Q: Are there any other new rules to know about? A: One youll notice is that teams can now have two players who they can keep on their roster while letting them play in the D-League. These players will be on two-way contracts that will enable a team to control their rights and call them up to the parent team -- sort of like how it works in baseball. These players will get better D-League salaries and get paid NBA salaries when theyre on the big team. Currently players on D-League teams can get called up by any team. The hope is this will keep more players from going overseas if they dont make a roster out of training camp or arent drafted, allowing teams to develop their young players over the course of a season.
