Mr. Paul Owens, director of the World Cities Culture Forum (WCCF),
expressed his expectation of the symposium. “I hope that it can be an
effective platform both for global cities to communicate with one
another and for Chengdu to promote its Tianfu Culture.” In his point of
view, Tianfu Culture highlights friendship and kindness. He is highly
impressed by the hospitality and generosity of the people in Chengdu,

Mr. Owens acclaimed the city for its great efforts to develop such
creative industries involving music, fashion and design. Through the
case study of Austin, capital of the U.S. state of Texas, which is known
for its well-developed music sector, he suggested Chengdu should
prioritize the industries with distinct strengths and advantages.
Mr. John Newbigin, founder and chairman of Creative England, a
not-for-profit organization dedicated to the growth of the creative
industries, expressed his hope to help small companies and startups from
Britain and Chengdu to get access into each other’s market. “Chengdu is
a dynamic and creative city. It provides various opportunities for
creative organizations and companies here,” he said.
He also shared London’s experience of developing the creative industry.
“Chengdu should be open wider to the outside world and make friends
worldwide. And it also needs to focus on its competitive industries,
such as the music and game sectors.”Mr. Bill Cotton, deputy mayor of
Bournemouth, the UK, described Chengdu in one sentence —”Chengdu, can
do!” It means that the city is developing rapidly and full of
opportunities, he explained.
Mr. Cotton pays lots of attention to Chengdu’s fashion sector. “We will
communicate and exchange views with industry leaders from Chengdu’s
fashion circle, and expect to cooperate with them in the near future. We
also look forward to seeing Chengdu’s fashion designs on the global
fashion stage.”
Mr. David Adam, founder of Global Cities, a consultancy which helps
commercial and public sector organizations, cultural and educational
institutions to build successful business strategies in global markets,
spoke highly of Chengdu. “This is my first time to visit Chengdu, and it
is a fast growing city as I expected,” said Mr. Adam. In his opinion,
Chengdu is an ideal place both for business and living.
Besides, Mr. Adam gave some advice for the cooperation between Chengdu
and other member cities of WCCF, “Chengdu should further the ties with
its WCCF peers in the innovation-driven fields. In terms of higher
education, it could conduct more international exchange programs for
students. As to the tourist sector, it could promote the Tianfu Culture
worldwide, by way of exhibitions, as well as music and food festivals.”
