Wake Forest is ready for two years worth of growing pains to start paying off. Earl Campbell Titans Jersey .The Demon Deacons begin Dave Clawsons third season Thursday night when they play host to a Tulane team debuting under new coach Willie Fritz.Wake Forest has finished 3-9 twice as part of Clawsons patient rebuild of the program, and last years Demon Deacons were one of the nations youngest teams. Now theyre a year older, with nine offensive starters returning, and theyre ready for the progress they made to show up in their record. This is the most talented group up front that weve had. This is the most cohesive group up front that weve had since I have been here, offensive lineman Tyler Hayworth said. We are a unit that has to work together and trust each other to be able to succeed. From last year to this year, we have built up that trust and built up these relationships with each other to where we are ready to play and we are prepared mentally and physically.John Wolford will start at quarterback for the Demon Deacons, but Kendall Hinton also will play. Wolford has started 22 of the 23 games hes played at the school, throwing for 1,791 yards last season while completing 61 percent of his passes with 11 interceptions and nine touchdowns. Hinton made two starts as a freshman in 2015 and rushed for seven touchdowns with four TD throws and five interceptions.Fritz is taking over a Tulane team that -- like Wake Forest -- is coming off consecutive 3-9 seasons, the latter of which cost fourth-year coach Curtis Johnson his job. His Georgia Southern teams led the Bowl Subdivision in rushing in both of his seasons there, and he led the Eagles to a Sun Belt title in his first season and a bowl game to end Year 2.The main thing I really want to see is incredible effort, Fritz said. We talk around here about, `The Wave dont beat the Wave. Lets stay away from those pre-snap penalties ... and just play a clean game.---Some things to know about the Tulane-Wake Forest opener:- RUNNING WAVE: The Green Wave figure to cycle in four running backs as part of a run-heavy system, with Dontrell Hilliard, Sherman Badie, Josh Rounds and Lazedrick Thompson getting most of the work. Theyll look to replicate what Fritzs Georgia Southern team did last year, averaging 363 yards per game and nearly 6.5 yards per carry. Tulane ranked 119th last year in the FBS in rushing, averaging just 115.8 yards.- DEMON DEACONS D: Wake Forest returns seven starters from their defense, but must replace three members of their front seven, including mainstay LBs Brandon Chubb and Hunter Williams. DL Duke Ejiofor will be important up front, after he recorded a sack in four of the seven games he played last year and had a team-best 4.5 sacks.- RUNNING WAKE: The Demon Deacons have struggled to get their ground game going under Clawson, mainly because of a young offensive line and injuries that mounted at key positions. Wake Forest was 123rd nationally in rushing last year and 127th in 2014. Theyve got more options this year, with freshman Cade Carney earning the start over redshirt freshman Rocky Reid and sophomore Matt Colburn. Freshman Tyler Bell, who rushed for a team-best 451 yards last year, was the first freshman to lead the team in rushing since 1982 but dealt with injuries during camp.- THE SERIES: Tulane has won both previous meetings between the schools with similar profiles -- small, private, academically elite -- but they havent met since 1995. Corey Davis Youth Jersey . Still, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke thought taking him out before the fifth inning was an unusual move. "Im looking up at the board and hes got two hits given up and one run, and Im taking him out after the fourth inning," Roenicke said. Warren Moon Jersey . Its sharpness matched my mind. This was no night to go to sleep. . Anthony Davis had 31 points and 17 rebounds in his seventh straight game with more than 20 points, but that was only enough to keep the Pelicans competitive into the final minutes. Andrew Bogut had 10 points and 15 rebounds for Golden State, which rebounded from a loss a night earlier in Oklahoma City and snapped a two-game skid. INDIANAPOLIS -- Andrew Luck missed T.Y. Hilton on one critical play Sunday. The Colts quarterback didnt make the same mistake again. On his second chance, Luck threw a perfect strike to Hilton with 1:17 to play, and the Pro Bowl receiver spun out of a tackle and zig-zagged 63 yards down the field to give Indianapolis a 26-22 victory over San Diego.Just 35 seconds earlier, Luck tried the same play with Hilton on fourth-and-7 but an off-target throw forced Hilton to spin around for an 8-yard catch on fourth-and-7. The next time, Luck got it right. It was the same sort of play and I kind of missed him, Luck said, referring to the fourth-down throw. So I came back to him and this time I hit him in stride.Hilton took care of the rest. Its the second time on Lucks home turf that he has led the Colts (1-2) to a go-ahead score in the waning seconds. But, unlike the season opener two weeks ago, the Colts recovered two fumbles in the final 62 seconds to preserve the victory.Luck finished 24 of 37 for 331 yards with one TD and one interception to earn his 15th career come-from-behind win.No, he wasnt flawless. But when it mattered most, Luck excelled with the two big plays to Hilton.Philip Rivers got two chances to win it. The first ended when Pro Bowl safety Mike Adams recovered a fumble with 62 seconds left. The second ended when linebacker DQwell Jackson covered the bouncing ball on the Chargers last gasp desperation play.Rivers was 26 of 39 for 330 yards. You have to put teams away when you have opportunities to do it or make the plays earlier in the game, Chargers coach Mike McCoy said. We didnt do that for four quarters. We have to make those plays.STILL WAITINGChargers defensive end Joey Bosa practiced in pads for the first time this week. The No. 3 overall draft pick still has not made his NFL debut. After showing up following a prolonged contract holdout, Bosas return was set back by a hamstring injury. Now the question is how much longer will the Chargers keep him out?DIGGING OUTIndy still hasnt started 0-3 since 2011, when Peyton Manning missed the entire season with an injured nerve. Ryan Tannehill Titans Jersey. How big was this win? Since the current playoff format took effect in 1990, only five 0-3 teams have made the postseason and nobody has done it since the 1998 Buffalo Bills.STRANGE DAYSOn what was supposed to be the final play of the game, the Chargers had no punt returner so they could send everyone to block Pat McAfees kick. McAfee pooched it inside the Chargers 20-yard line where the Colts downed it. One problem: The refs called illegal touching, giving San Diego an untimed play. Afterward, Pagano explained the Colts werent allowed to touch it until the refs blew the ball dead.THEY SAID ITChargers: Rivers on the unsportsmanlike conduct call he drew after a 43-yard completion put San Diego at the Indy 6: Thats the most unfair penalty Ive ever gotten. Ive never gotten one like that. Ive never gotten one for really doing nothing. It maybe was the cleanest thing said on that field today and he (the official) was 30 yards away. From what I hear, it looked like nothing on the TV, but I dont know.Colts: Coach Chuck Pagano on his thoughts as Hilton broke the tackle: Probably like you guys, too much time on the clock. If youre going to score, dont score so fast.INJURY REPORTChargers: Linebacker Manti Teo came in as San Diegos leading tackler, but left in the first quarter with an Achilles tendon injury and did not return. The injury occurred when he appeared to plant his left leg while chasing Gore into the flat. McCoy said Teo will undergo tests Monday morning to confirm the initial diagnosis.Colts: The Colts played most of the game their regular starters on the right side of their offensive line. Guard Denzelle Good (back) was inactive and Reitz (back) left during the first half.---Online: AP NFL website: and ' ' '

Kill the other guy before he kills you was a line beloved of Jack Dempsey, the world heavyweight boxing champion of the early 1920s. Dempseys phrase is known to plenty of sportsmen, and Allan Border once used it to describe how Australia squandered the advantage of hosting the 1992 World Cup. Border is present in Kandy to watch this match, and was unimpressed by the visitors batting effort on day two, which happened also to be his 61st birthday.No-one knows better than Border that Test cricket can often require a similar level of ruthlessness to that espoused by Dempsey: the ability to slam the door shut on the opposition before they can take the chance to regroup and respond later on in a match. Having rolled Sri Lanka cheaply on the first day, Australias batsmen had the chance to do the slamming, a role they have generally enjoyed. Through some poor shot selection and diligent Sri Lankan bowling, they did not, and the consequence was to watch Kusal Mendis charge into the resultant breach. It was a somewhat ironic turn of events, given that over the past 33 years it has invariably been the Sri Lankans squandering strong positions over Australia. Border led his 1992 touring team to a most unlikely victory in Colombo after surrendering a first-innings advantage of 291. A more confident and accomplished Australian side thrice bailed out Ricky Ponting on his first tour as captain in 2004, when in each Test the tourists surrendered a first innings lead. Most dramatic of the turnarounds came in Kandy, where Australia were bowled out for 120 on day one, but managed to limit Sri Lanka to a first innings lead of 91.Those figures were oddly reminiscent of proceedings at Pallekele the past few days: the rush of wickets on day one, the failure to take advantage on day two, the strong riposte on day three. The major difference of course was the reversal of roles, and the dominant innings being played not by a promoted Adam Gilchrist but the ebullient Mendis. At length he showcased an arsenal of strokes to be widely admired, and a level of determination to put some of the Australians less savoury day two shots to considerable shame. His combination of positivity and organisation contrasted with Steven Smiths stumping, even if there was some good fortune along the way. For most of the morning Steve OKeefe looked a decent chance to get Mendis lbw with a ball sliding into the stumps from around the wicket, and the left-arm spinners withdrawal from the attack due to a hamstring complaint was a grievous blow to Smith. OKeefes eagerness to chase lbw verdicts also had the impact of costing Australia their two DRS referrals before lunch arrived, an eventuality that, like their first innings batting, would sting later.Otherwise the Australian bowlers did not do a whole lot wrong: Mitchell Starc got the new ball swinging for a couple of early wickets, Josh Hazlewood retained a disciplined line without the same seam movement he had found on day one, and Nathan Lyon delivered spells that were never less than presentable and often dangerous. But the truth of the matter is that they should have been defending a far bigger lead, if they were even bowling at all on day three.Batting conditions in this match have been somewhat tricky, but never impossible. Greatter application was required when Australia had the chance, for they will now be facing a testy fourth innings chase and the prospect of facing up to Rangana Herath and Lakshan Sandakan with scoreboard pressure on their side. Allan Houston Jersey. Most troubling for the coach Darren Lehmann will be the fact that Australias mediocre first innings took place without the worry of a mighty first innings total hanging over his batsmen: the impediment widely attributed to their failures in the UAE in 2014.Instead, they were simply confounded by the muddle of their own minds and techniques, with failings gleefully exploited by the aforementioned spin duo. That will be maddening for each batsman to ruminate upon, as evidenced by the sullen faces and gestures of frustration that cropped up increasingly across day three. When Smith offered a Border-style teapot pose it wasnt hard to recall his stumping; when Mitchell Marsh kicked the dust in mid-pitch after another stout Sri Lankan forward defensive, it was as much about the Sandakan googly he missed as the ball that had just been hit.Even the momentous occasion of Lyons 200th Test wicket was reduced to something of a sidelight by the match scenario. Five years ago Lyon had made his debut with a five-for against Sri Lanka in Galle, his first-ball victim Kumar Sangakkara. The smiles and celebrations were more reserved, even fatigued this time around, after Dhananjaya de Silva bunted a catch to mid-off. More runs in the bank and Lyon may not only have been chasing wicket 200 but the buzz of an innings victory.Mentally speaking, the Australians now have a sizeable hurdle to get over, just as Sri Lanka have done over the years. But where Sri Lankas issue often seemed to be about overcoming Australia in a Test match, Australias issue is with finding a way to win in Asian conditions. In recent times they have been able to console themselves with the thought that encounters with India and Pakistan were won by the more accomplished team in the conditions. But an unfancied Sri Lankan side with an abominable recent record is another matter entirely. The coaching staff and team psychologist Michael Lloyd will have a power of work ahead of them should a defeat unfold here. A sub-par result in Sri Lanka would likely require a substantial rethink abut the way some of Australias set-up has operated under Lehmann, with the emphasis on providing plenty of net bowling and throw-down volume for batsmen while leaving them free to find their own methods to succeed. Lehmann is fond of saying mistakes are fine so long as they are not repeated: he must now hope for plenty of remedial work in the fourth innings. There have been times leading into this match when it was easy to wonder where Sri Lankas runs would come from, given the retirement of the big three and the repeated failure of their replacements in subsequent Tests. A sturdy Australian first innings and this sequence may well have continued, under the weight of runs and the crush of pressure. Smiths team contrived to leave the game open, however, and now find themselves staggering towards the latter rounds of this contest behind on points. ' ' '
LOUISVILLE, Ky. Yohan Cabaye France Jersey . -- Louisvilles success under coach Bobby Petrino has changed the way players are thinking -- from merely competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference to winning championships.A key part of realizing that lofty dream is getting past Atlantic Division heavyweights Clemson and Florida State.Louisville hopes to carry momentum from last seasons 8-2 closing stretch into serious pursuit of a division title in Petrinos third season. Fueling those expectations is the offensive stability behind mobile sophomore quarterback Lamar Jackson, an experienced line and an impressive receiver corps. The Cardinals could use some depth on the defensive line around DeAngelo Brown but are solid at linebacker and in the secondary, strengths that might explain their lofty declarations.I like to set the bar high for us, for me and for the team, junior cornerback Trumaine Washington said. I know we can do it. I know I can do it. We dont have any rookies to begin. We got everybody back on offense and defense. Im just ready to get to the national championship. After starting 0-3 last year, Petrino just wants to see progress. Were still going to have to make sure we do a great job of getting better as the year goes on, Petrino said. Louisvilles immediate priority is winning the division, which requires getting the most out of strong players on both sides of the ball.Jackson presents a formidable dual threat after combining for 2,800 offensive yards and 23 touchdowns in a breakout freshman season. However, Petrino stops short of saying that Jackson will have free rein in the offense; he drew laughter on media day after saying, he has the freedom to do exactly what we tell him.Brown (40 tackles, two sacks) is considered a big run-stopper for Louisville, which must see if juniors Chris Williams, Drew Bailey, Johnny Richardson or Kyle Shortridge will spend more time around him. If the Cardinals recent history of developing defensive talent means anything, they should fill those voids without missing a beat.Said linebacker Devonte Fields, we still have got to fix some communication errors, but everything else, weve been pretty solid.CENTRAL RECEIVINGA young, inexperienced wide receiver corps last season could prove to be Louisvilles deepest unit. The Cardinals return their top two pass-catchers in James Quick and Jamari Staples, while former quarterback Reggie Bonnafon is ready to show his talent and speed as a full-time receiver. Traveon Samuel and JaQuay Savage are emerging talents.SEEKING SPECIALISTSOne of Louisvilles strongest areas is in transition with the departures of reliable place kicker John Wallace and dependable punter Josh Appleby. Both positions are wide open, and Petrino is looking at Evan OHara, Blanton Creque, Anthony George for the kicking game. Mason King and Austin Johnson will compete for the punting job.KEY GAMESLouisvilles Atlantic Division prospects could be determined by early October as it faces conference favorites Florida State (home, Sept. 17) and Clemson (away, Oct. 1). The Cardinals Nov. 17 non-conference showdown at Houston offers an intriguing chance for revenge after the Cougars dealt them a rare home loss during last years 0-3 start.SEASON OPENERLouisville hosts Charlotte on Sept. 1. The 49ers went 3-9 in their first season in FBS with Conference USA and lost nine of their final 10.PREDICTIONLouisville has battled Florida State and Clemson but must to find a way to beat one or both to think about claiming the Atlantic division.----AP freelance writer Steve Bittenbender contributed to this report.----Online:AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.orgFollow Gary B. ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo offered a unique strategy when asked about defending Houstons high-powered offense on Saturday. Were trying to petition to the NCAA to see if we can play 15 guys on the field, Niumatalolo said.No. 6 Houston (5-0, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) opened the season by scoring 33 points against then-third ranked Oklahoma and has not slowed down. Employing a multiple spread offense conceived by head coach Tom Herman, the Cougars rank 19th in the Football Bowl Subdivision in total offense with 506 yards per game and 12th in scoring offense with an average of 44.2 points.Quarterback Greg Ward Jr. leads the nations 25th -ranked passing offense (304.6 yards). Ward has completed 99 of 140 passes for 1,325 yards and eight touchdowns.Ward was a really good player last year and hes even better this year, Niumatalolo said. Nobody has been able to slow him down. Hes very patient in the pocket and is well-coached.Navys defensive staff spent Sunday and Monday reviewing film of Houstons five games this season and saw every possible defensive scheme. Some teams rushed three defenders and dropped eight in coverage while others rushed four and dropped seven. Oklahoma was among the opponents that unleashed a bunch of blitzes on Ward with little success. Were like everybody else in the country -- were still searching for answers on how to stop him, Niumatalolo said of Ward. Some things to know about the Houston-Navy matchup.TOUGH ON DEFENSE, TOO: Houston is far from one-dimensional. The Cougars are third in the country in scoring defense and sixth in total defense, holding opponents to 11.2 points and 250 yards. You dont become (No. 6) in the country by just being good in one phase, Niumatalolo said. Theyre ranked where they are for a reason. Theyre just so good in so many places. A well-coached team with so many good players is a tough combination.Inside linebacker Steven Taylor leads the Houston defense with 27 tackles (six for loss) and 5 + sacks. A 28-14 loss in Colorado Springs likely means the coveted Commander-in-Chiefs Trophy will be departing Annapolis. After getting your butt whipped by one of your rivals, a team like Houston wakes you up pretty quickly. The Aggies chipped away at the deficit and got within 8-7 following a kill by sophomore middle blocker Kaitlyn Blake, but Texas A&M was unable to close the gap.Wisconsin outhit A&M, .438 to .167, in the set to pull away. The Badgers were up 19-14 and closed out the frame on a 6-2 run with Haggerty posting her ninth kill to end the set.Trailing 3-2 in the second set, Texas A&M freshman Hollann Hans caught fire, posting five kills during a 7-1 run to put the Aggies ahead, 10-5. It would be A&Ms largest lead of the match before Wisconsin stormed back with Haggerty getting four kills during a 5-0 run that gave the Badgers a 16-13 lead. The Aggies got within 18-16 following Hans sixth kill of the frame, but Wisconsin once again reeled off five unanswered points, posting three blocks during the run that put the Badgers up, 23-16. Blake and junior opposite hitter Ashlie Reasor then propelled a 5-0 Aggie run, teaming for two blocks and each posting a kill during the rally that brought the Aggies back into a tie, 13-13. Texas A&M also tied the score at 15-all on a kill by Reasor and took the lead at 16-15 when the Badgers were whistled for reaching over the net and contacting the ball on A&Ms side. The Aggies lead was short lived, however, as Wisconsin came back with three consecutive kills.Texas A&M managed to tie the score at 18-18 on a Hans kill and later tied the score for the ninth and final time at 21-21 following a huge block by Blake and junior setter Stephanie Aiple. The Aggies, however, were unable to regain the lead as the Badgers went on a 4-1 run to close out the set and complete the sweep. As a team, Wisconsin outhit Texas A&M, .315 to .178, for the match, posting 47 kills to A&Ms 35. The Badgers also led the Aggies in blocks, 11-5.Hans posted her second consecutive double-double with a team-high and career-high 13 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Amy Houser led the Aggies in digs with a personal-best 11, and Blake led in blocks with four. The defending Southeastern Conference champion Aggies open conference play against Alabama on Friday, Sept. 23 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and host Auburn at Reed Arena in their SEC home opener on Sunday, Sept. 25.TEXAS A&M HEAD COACH LAURIE CORBELLI On Wisconsins setter Lauren Carlini... Shes really, really good. They know exactly what they are going to get. In fact, not just the setter, it seemed to me that all their second balls... [were] put it in a position where their attackers could get a swing. Not many teams are good at that. We are not very good at that. We just learned that is something we really need to get a lot better at.On Wisconsins game...They were really sharp today. I havent seen them play like that on video yet. They didnt miss a beat. Their hitters didnt make unforced errors, 27 kills for a freshman. We never made one adjustment on her. She did a fantastic job and we did a really poor job.On moving forward... I think Hollann Hans, as a freshman to out-score any of our returners by double, thats really positive. Shes a phenomenal competitor. Shes composed. She had a tough first set, first time to play at Reed Arena and being an Aggie at her home court. Okay, thats fine; thats going to happen, but she refocused and got herself out there and really did some beautiful things...TEXAS A&M JUNIOR SETTER STEPHANIE AIPLE On playing ranked teams... Its always good to get a win off of a ranked team, and seeing that we arent strikes reality with us. We arent doing what we need to do in practice. We arent doing what we need to do off the court. Its a serious change that the team needs to make.On Hollann Hans... Shes doing amazing as a freshman. Shes fearless and has a great mindset. If she makes an error she moves on. She doesnt get down on herself. She moves on to the next play, and I think upperclassmen can even learn from that. You can see the fight in her eyes. I can say Hans Im giving you this ball, and shell say, okay give me this ball. I think Hollann is doing an amazing job.On the takeaway from todays game...We cant really take much away from this game except realizing that something has to change. We put this game in the past and its a whole new season coming up. Its definitely a learning experience, but we are ready for SECs. Last year we had a rough preseason as well, but we did a good job of putting the preseason in the past, so I think we just have to look at it and be like its just preseason. Yes, its not what we wanted, but we cant think about that stuff because its not going to make us any better in the future. We will come into the next practice and have a different mindset for SECs.TEXAS A&M FRESHMAN OUTSIDE HITTER HOLLANN HANS On playing at Reed Arena for the first time... It was awesome. Ive dreamed of this forever and finally getting to play here was an awesome feeling. I loved it. I always have pregame nerves and it took me awhile to get all of the nerves out, especially playing in front of a home crowd, but it was good.On her play... I was happy with it. I could have done things a little differently with my defense and blocking. I have a lot of things to work on, but other than that I tried my best, so thats all that matters. On gaining confidence from Coach Laurie Corbelli and setter Stephanie Aiple... It really helps build my confidence with (Aiple) as a setter, because she pretty much gets (the ball) to the target every single time, so that builds my confidence with knowing that she is going to get me a good set. Im just going to keep working hard to build Laurie and Johns (Corbelli, associate head coach) confidence in me and keep working hard in practice and get better at my game.On starting SEC play... Im so excited. Alabama is a great team, so its going to be a good game. I know that if we fix some things that we are an amazing team with amazing players, so Im very excited to start SEC. From filmmaker Nanette Burstein (On the Ropes), The Price of Gold revisits the saga that rocked the figure skating world ahead of the 1994 Lillehammer Olympic Winter Games: the assault on Nancy Kerrigan, and the plot that led its way back to her rival Tonya Harding. DAVIE, Fla. -- Being an aggressive cornerback, Xavien Howard interrupted an inquisitors question Tuesday, and it went incomplete. The subject was Howards most eye-catching attribute, and the Miami Dolphins rookie eagerly jumped in midway through the query.Ball skill, Howard answered. Ive been a playmaker. They got me here for a reason. Ive just got to do what I did in college, and do more. Yes sir. Takeaways. Yes sir.Now that hes back at practice, the Dolphins second-round draft pick is showing some swagger. Howard missed the first three weeks of camp recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery, which may have spoiled his chances of starting at cornerback in the season opener. He was activated last week from the physically unable to perform list, practiced for the third day in a row Tuesday, and could provide a significant upgrade in a shaky secondary. It feels good to be back out there competing again with my guys, Howard said. The former Baylor star required right knee surgery after hurting his knee on the final day of minicamp in June. That temporarily took him out of the competition for the job opposite veteran newcomer Byron Maxwell.Howard said his goal remains to win a starting job this year, and hes not fretting about the practice time missed.I wouldnt call it a setback, he said. Id just say its a learning process that I went through, and Im just learning from it -- a lot of mental reps, just seeing what the older guys were doing and learning from them. Before the injury, Howard received favorable reviews in offseason drills. New coach Adam Gase especially liked the knack Howard showed for deflections and interceptions.. Paul Aguilar Jersey. He gets his hands on a lot of balls, Gase said. When he does get both hands up to make a play on the ball, he usually catches it.Howard made nine interceptions in his final two years at Baylor, and now the Dolphins are eager to see him in an NFL game. Hell sit out Thursday against Atlanta, but expects to play in next weeks preseason finale, and has no doubt hell play in the season opener Sept. 11 at Seattle. In Howards absence, converted receiver Tony Lippett has been working with the first team at cornerback. Expected to join the mix eventually is veteran newcomer Chris Culliver, who has yet to practice while he recovers from a serious knee injury last Thanksgiving. This week the Dolphins have slowly been working Howard into one-on-one and team drills.I wouldnt say hes far behind mentally, Gase said. Hes dialed in to what were doing. Hes playing one-on-one coverage a lot of the time. Thats his strength. Were going to try to lean on his strength of matching him up with somebody and letting him go.That sounds good to Howard. He wore an NFL uniform for the first time Friday, watching from the sideline when the Dolphins played at Dallas.I just couldnt explain the feeling, he said. It was my first NFL game and I was excited, cheering guys on.Soon he expects to have teammates cheering for him.---AP NFL website: and Steven Wine on Twitter: His work can be found at ' ' '

Paul Gallen claims all-in scuffles are a worse look for the NRL than two players punching, and offenders should be condemned to the sin bin. Irv Smith Jr. Youth Jersey .The veteran forward expressed the strong opinion after he was involved in a major scuffle during Cronullas physical 37-12 win over the Sydney Roosters on Saturday.Roosters captain Jake Friend slapped Gallen on the back of the head, then stood over him, after the Sharks skipper had turned the ball over in a testy first half.Gallen took exception to the goading, getting up and slamming Friend to the ground, which instigated yet another all-in melee that has plagued the competition since punching resulted in an automatic sin-bin in the wake of the former NSW skippers haymaker on Queenslands Nate Myles during the 2013 State of Origin series. His comments come in the same week teammate Andrew Fifita said he would gladly cop a punch to the chin if it meant he could coax a jab from an opposition player.Gallen said it wasnt the niggle that has become a blight on the game, but the amount of players rushing in afterwards that caused a bigger stain on the on-field product. Its a worse look ... players coming in pushing and shoving, than a couple of blokes throwing punches. I think those who want to run in from 20-30 metres away should be sent to the sin bin, he said.Eventually penalised for his act of retribution on Saturday night, Gallen also conceded that he should have kept his cool and not retaliated against the Roosters hooker. He stood over me like he was seven-foot tall. Ive never taken a backward step and neither has he. Its frustrating because we all know we cant do anything about it anymore, he said. But Ive probably got to keep my head a little bit more there. GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers are awaiting direction from the NFL Players Association before they talk to anyone from the league office about the Al Jazeera America report that linked the Green Bay Packers defensive stars to performance-enhancing drugs. Both linebackers said Tuesday theyre looking forward to being cleared just as Peyton Manning was on Monday, when the NFL released a statement announcing it found no credible evidence against the former Denver Broncos quarterback. Its bogus, but its kind of annoying that I have to continue to deal with this, Matthews said after the Packers first training camp practice of the year. But the truth will come out, and everything I said when the allegations came out I still stand by, so I just try to kind of put that in the rearview mirror and focus on the season.Peppers would only stand by his original denial from when the report surfaced in December.Im just trying to focus on camp and getting ready to play games, Peppers said. Not nonsense.Maatthews said that it was good to see Manning cleared and that he hoped the rest of the players named in the report would receive the same treatment. Irv Smith Jr. Jersey. Im just kind of waiting for the NFL to conduct its investigation, in which case the truth will come out, and itll just be another thing Ive had to deal with in my career, but theres nothing I can really do now, Matthews said. Its kind of ridiculous. Its good to see Peyton, at least, cleared in some regards, and I hope the names will go down the list. But, in the meantime, Im just obviously focusing on the start of the season, and well take it from that. Im going to let the NFL and NFLPA kind of figure it out and be advised on what kind of the next step is. Its been a long, drawn-out process, but well see once that time comes. Like I said in the past, I have nothing to hide, so its not an issue for me one way or the other. ' ' '

Championship drag racing team owner Don Schumacher once spotted Leah Pritchett racing Nostalgia Funny Cars and brought her to Indianapolis for a test session prior to the U. Joe Kelly Dodgers Jersey .S. Nationals. She proceeded to earn her NHRA Nitro Funny Car license with Don Schumacher Racing. That was eight years ago. At this years U.S. Nationals on Labor Day weekend, Pritchett raced her Don Schumacher Racing Top Fuel car into the NHRAs six-race Countdown to the Championship for the first time.Pritchett entered nationals tied with Terry McMillen for 10th in points. Both drivers were eliminated in the first round, but because Pritchett outqualified McMillen by six positions (she was 10th; he was 16th), she beat him by one point for the final Countdown position.Actions speak louder than words, Pritchett said. I said I was going to make the Countdown and we did. Im going to give everybody one hell of a run for their money for this championship.By Pritchett making the Countdown, which begins Friday at zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina, all eight DSR teams are in title contention: four in Top Fuel and four in Funny Car. It is Pritchett, however, who is the surprise of the group.?Four races into the season, Pritchetts team, owned by Bob Vandergriff Jr., abruptly shut down. After the unexpected death of the teams financial backer and C&J Energy Services founder Josh Comstock, Vandergriff announced his retirement. Pritchett hastily put together a deal for the Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX with Lagana Family Racing, but she had nothing solidified for the next event. Pritchett then turned to Schumacher.I went ahead and hired Leah, even though I didnt have a car for her to race, Schumacher said. I did put a team together a couple of races later. Shes been employed by me ever since the Atlanta race [in May].Pritchett was responsible for obtaining the teams funding -- $125,000 per race. That money pays for things such as parts, fuel, per diem for crew members and hotel rooms. In the first 18 races this season, she missed only one because of a lack of a sponsor. She currently has sponsors for four of the six Countdown events, but Schumacher has assured her shell be at all of them.Schumacher supplies the cars, which have to be built, the transporter for them and the full-time crew at the shop to build and prepare the cars.Im very impressed by her effort, hard work to get that done [acquire funding] and her willingness to do anything necessary sponsorship-wise, Schumacher said. Shes a talented driver, quick on the starting line. Shes very good with TV, very good with sponsors and a very good teammate, which is very important to my organization. DETROIT -- Chris Tillman returns just in time to face a team he has dominated throughout his career. The Baltimore Orioles ace will be activated from the 15-day disabled list and start the finale of a three-game series on Sunday in Detroit. Hell be opposed by Tigers ace Justin Verlander in a powerhouse matchup.Tillman made a quick recovery from right shoulder bursitis after an uncharacteristic performance on Aug. 20 in which he allowed six runs in two innings to Houston. Tillman won 14 of his first 16 decisions but lost three of his last four before being sidelined. He has always found a way to neutralize the usually potent Detroit offense. In eight career starts, Tillman is 5-0 with a 2.56 ERA. He tossed seven shutout innings against the Tigers on May 13 while outdueling Verlander in a 1-0 Orioles triumph. Its a challenge to navigate your way through it as a starter, he said of Detroits lineup. Youve got to respect them, but youve got to go out and do the same thing every time. You want to give your team a chance to win, make good quality pitches and let your defense work. The Orioles have managed to stay in the American League East race, as well as the wild-card hunt, during Tillmans absence. They are two games behind division leader Baltimore and one game ahead of the Tigers for the final playoff spot after an 11-3 win over Detroit on Saturday. The guys have been throwing well. Its been fun to watch, especially the younger guys, Tillman said. Its always good to see everyone kind of come together as a group and do your job to the best of your ability. Its been a tough two weeks (for hhimself) but fun to watch. Julio Urias Jersey. Verlander has made 11 consecutive quality starts, the longest such streak of his career. During that stretch, hes 6-1 with a 2.09 ERA.Its good to have a pitcher like him because regardless of how the team is doing or how good the pitcher is that youre facing, you know youre going to have a chance to win when hes on the mound, Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said. That gives you a boost of confidence going into a game.Verlander, who leads the AL with a .209 opponents batting average, has a strong record against Baltimore. Hes 9-4 with a .370 ERA in 17 starts against the Orioles with 100 strikeouts.Thats still doesnt match Tillmans hex over the Tigers.Hes got a good hard cutter, its kind of like a hard slider, which is tough for a right-handed lineup, Ausmus said of Tillman. Hes a good pitcher, theres no secret there. What is a mystery is how Tillman will look after a three-week absence.I expect him to be a little rusty, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. Theres a lot of unknown there. More than anything, wed just like him to be healthy because even if he has a little rusty start, each one of them (afterward) will get better. The Orioles lead the season series 4-2. They are not scheduled to face each other again during the regular season, though a postseason matchup is certainly a possibility. This is critical because were coming down to the wire and teams are in similar situations from a standings perspective, Ausmus said.
