One of the most prominent numbers of 2016 has been the batting stats for Englands lower middle order. Kyrie Irving Shoes For Sale . Jonny Bairstow has already scored 1355 Test runs in 2016 - which is more than any other batsman this year - of which 1161 have come when he has batted at No. 6 or 7. With Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali contributing handsomely at those positions too, England have enormous firepower in their lower middle order, who are capable of turning matches around with the ability to not only score runs, but score them quickly. All three have shown the ability to build on a solid foundation by the top order, but more importantly, have repeatedly hauled England out of a hole when they have lost early wickets. Against Australias strong pace attack, it is entirely possible that England lose a few early wickets. If that does happen, the presence of a strong lower middle order could be priceless. While Englands lower middle order has proved their quality time and again in these last 15 months, Australias has struggled. In the period since the last Ashes series in 2015, their Nos. 6 and 7 batsmen have averaged 19.81. The averages for Australia and England are at the two ends of the list: England are at the head of the class with their 50-plus class, while Australia make up the bottom. The difference between the averages for England and India, the next best team, further illustrates how much better than all other teams they have been in this aspect of their batting. Three England batsmen have scored 450-plus runs at Nos. 6 and 7 since the last Ashes, and the numbers for all of them are hugely impressive: they have all scored multiple hundreds - with a top score of more than 150 - and average more than 44 at strike rates greater than 59. Only two Australian batsmen have batted more than twice at those positions in this period, and their numbers are limp by comparison. Peter Nevill, no longer in favour with the selectors after the Hobart fiasco, has tried to dig in and bat time, but only averages 21.61, while Mitchell Marsh hasnt done much better. Nevills 66 is the highest for Australia at these two slots, and one of only three 50-plus scores in 36 innings, compared to Englands highest of 258, and 20 fifty-plus scores in 65 innings.Australia tried new faces at these positions in the Adelaide Test against South Africa, but unless they contribute handsomely and cement their places by the Ashes, England will have a huge advantage in this aspect. The fact that all three of their stars at these positions have a second skill in their armoury - Bairstow behind the stumps, Moeen and Stokes with the ball - further adds to Englands depth. The pace comparisonBoth Australia and England are largely reliant on their quick bowlers for wickets, and on pitches which should be reasonably fast and bouncy, this battle between the two pace attacks promises to be an enthralling one. In the recent Australia-South Africa series, fast bowlers accounted for 82 wickets, the fourth-highest ever in a three-Test series in Australia - the three higher ones were all between 1979 and 1982, and two of them featured West Indies. In the 15 months since the last Ashes, South Africa, England and Australia have the best fast-bowling stats, and on pitches likely to offer reasonable pace and bounce, this promises to be a spicy pace contest. James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood have all taken 50-plus Test wickets at sub-30 averages in the last 15 months, but England seem to have the better support act, in the form of Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes, both of whom have taken 35-plus wickets at impressive averages during this period. Australias third-highest wicket-taker among their pace attack is Mitchell Marsh, with 20 wickets at 38.40. That also suggests Australia might be more reliant on their top two bowlers, and could be badly hit if either of them is unavailable due to injury. Steven Smith v Joe RootThey are the best batsmen in their teams, and among the best going around today. In the last 15 months, they are both among the top six run-scorers in Tests: Root leads the charts with 1669 runs to Smiths 1216, but Smith has played only 24 innings to Roots 36 and has the better average. Roots recent conversion rate - three hundreds in 15 fifty-plus scores - is also a bit of a worry, compared to Smiths four in ten. Both Smith and Root were prolific in the 2015 Ashes - Smith scored 508 runs at 56.44 and Root 460 at 57.50, but the overall averages for both in Ashes games are in the early 40s: 41.29 for Root, and 43.19 for Smith. Those numbers will only go up, since both werent so prolific in their first couple of Ashes series. Smith will have home advantage next season: he averages 63.29 in home Tests, while Root only averaged 27.42 in eight innings in the 5-0 drubbing in 2013-14. Given Roots class and his recent form, though, the numbers are unlikely to be as skewed in the 2017-18 Ashes. The Cook contrastAlastair Cook has played six Ashes series. In the 2010-11 series in Australia, he was in irresistible form, scoring 766 runs in seven innings, with three centuries. In the remaining 25 Ashes Tests, he has scored less than twice the tally of 2010-11, with only one hundred in 48 innings. The Bairstow-Stokes-Moeen troika gives England plenty of muscle in the middle order, but England will a long way towards winning the Ashes if Cook can summon some of the form of 2010-11. With Starc and Hazlewood expected to be at the top of their game, a solid Cook defying them for long periods will significantly ease the run-scoring task for Englands middle order. LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraskas victory over Purdue wont convince skeptics whove been saying the No. 8 Cornhuskers arent worthy of a top-10 ranking. The wait to find out how good they really are is almost over.In their final tuneup before their Big Ten West showdown at No. 10 Wisconsin, they came back from a four-point halftime deficit to beat the Boilermakers 27-14 Saturday.Once again, and this time against a 24-point underdog, the Huskers (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) underperformed against a lesser opponent until pulling away in the second half. Still, theyll take their best record since 2001 into the game in Madison. These games, they havent been pretty, linebacker Josh Banderas said. My hearts been going in a lot of them. Id like to have a couple where that s not the case. But were going to find that our will to win is up there with the best in the country. No matter what team is in front of us, were going to find a way to win somehow.Tommy Armstrong Jr. accounted for 303 yards of total offense and two touchdowns, and Purdue (3-4, 1-3) managed only 94 yards in the second half in interim coach Gerad Parkers first game since taking over for the fired Darrell Hazell. What a great first half we played, Parker said. We battled through some tough things and had fun with it and smiled about it whether things worked or not. I thought we did the same thing with our effort the second half. Its just one of those things where they made more plays than we did.The Huskers lost 55-45 at Purdue last year, and Memorial Stadium was in a stunned silence as the Boilermakers pulled out to a 14-10 lead on David Bloughs two touchdown passes to DeAngelo Yancey, the second one an 88-yard catch-and-run.But the Huskers scored on three straight possessions after going three-and-out on their first series of the second half. This will sound like a little bit of a broken record, but were extremely happy to win the game, coach Mike Riley said. My feelings are Purdue came here and played hard and their intentions were to win. Their quarterback is a good player and made plays, and so did their team. We struggled in a lot of ways and just had to sstay with it. Kyrie Irving Shoes Deals. Armstrongs 40-yard pass to DeMornay Pierson-El gave the Huskers the lead, and Alonzo Moore went 24 yards for a touchdown on a jet sweep and Drew Brown kicked a career-long 51-yard field goal for the games final points. The Huskers, with a banged-up offensive line and facing a Purdue defense crowding the line of scrimmage, leaned on the pass far more than expected against the Big Tens worst rushing defense. Armstrong was hit-and-miss, and they went punt-punt-punt-interception on their last four series of the half.Leading Nebraska on the road at half in his first game since replacing Hazell left Parker emotional for his halftime interview with an ABC sideline reporter.Im almost in tears and got chills all over me, he said.THE TAKEAWAYPurdue: Parker said the Boilermakers would play as if they had nothing to lose, and thats what they did. They went for it on fourth down four times, converting twice and scoring a touchdown on one of them.Nebraska: The Huskers continue to scuffle with lesser opponents. They could be in trouble if they dont step up their game against the tougher opponents that are fast approaching.KEY NUMBERSArmstrong was 17 for 31 for 252 yards and ran 10 times for 51, and he set the school record with his 13th game with 300 yards or more of total offense. Terrell Newby had 82 yards on 22 carries for the Huskers.Blough was 25 of 43 for 309 yards, the fifth 300-yard day of his career and his most in a road game. Yancey caught four balls for 100 yards.POLL IMPLICATIONSEven though at least one team ahead of them in the poll will have lost, the Huskers dont merit a promotion after an uninspired performance. They might even slip a spot or two.UP NEXT:Purdue: The Boilermakers host Penn State to begin a stretch of three home games in four weeks.Nebraska: Their season-defining stretch starts at No. 10 Wisconsin next Saturday and continues the following week at No. 2 Ohio State.---Online:AP college football website: ' ' '
OXFORD, Miss. Vapormax Plus Canada . -- Mississippi coach Hugh Freeze made a surprise choice to protect his teams most valuable asset.Junior Rod Taylor will be the starter at left tackle when No. 11 Ole Miss plays No. 4 Florida State on Monday in Orlando, Florida. That means the 6-foot-3, 329-pounder -- who has never made a start at either tackle spot -- will be charged with protecting quarterback Chad Kellys blindside against the Seminoles talented defense. If Ole Miss expects another banner year from Kelly -- who threw for 4,042 yards and running for 500 more during the programs 10-win season a year ago -- Taylor and the rest of the offensive line will have to keep the quarterback from getting pressured, hit and sacked.Freeze said he loves the work that Taylor and the rest of the offensive line has done during preseason camp. Even so, he said its hard to predict how the relatively inexperienced group will react to one of the best teams in the country.I like what I see on tape, but give me a couple weeks and we will know if it is fools gold or not, Freeze said.Taylor is a converted guard, but still beat out prized freshman recruit Greg Little and a handful of other candidates. He replaces Laremy Tunsil, a three-year starter who was a first-round NFL draft pick by the Miami Dolphins.Freeze acknowledges Taylor doesnt have the ideal body to play left tackle. Hes a little short for the position and doesnt have the longest arms, but Freeze says Taylors athleticism makes up for it.His quarterback agrees.Hes been really good, Kelly said. Hes an athletic guy. Hes got a lot of confidence and hes physical. Playing the left tackle position thats what you need. As long as hes stays the course, does the right thing and keeps on learning hell be good.Senior center Robert Conyers -- one of the few veterans up front -- says Taylor should be fine as long as hes mentally prepared.I think it starts more between your ears, Conyers said. Being smart and knowing where you can get beat and where you cant get beat. If you know what youre doing, thats half the battle. Hes got a leg up on everybody else just because hes more athletic than just about anybody who plays that position.Taylors emergence was a bit of a surprise considering his career has been checkered with occasional discipline problems. The latest was when he was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting during the spring.Senior tight end Evan Engram said its been rewarding to see Taylor mature during the summer and is confident he can anchor the left side of the line.If he takes this seriously, applies himself and puts the work in he can be that pivotal player who could change the shape of our offensive line and even our team, Engram said.Florida State will undoubtedly put Taylors maturity to the test early and often on Monday. The Seminoles have made no secret that disrupting Kellys rhythm is crucial to their success.Chad Kelly, hes what keeps the factory running over there, Florida State safety Derwin James said. Hes a big part of what they do. They feed off him. He can beat you on the run, he can beat you with the pass.-----AP Sports Writer Joe Reedy in Tallahassee, Florida, contributed to this story.-----Follow David Brandt on Twitter: . Leicestershire 330 for 5 (Cosgrove 111, Pettini 109*, Sanderson 3-39) vs NorthamptonshireScorecard Centuries from Mark Cosgrove and Mark Pettini saw Leicestershire enjoy a healthy opening day in the Specsavers County Championship at Wantage Road. The pair helped the visitors recover from 61 for 3 to close 330 for 5.Cosgrove, Leicestershires captain, made his fourth century of the season and steered his side out of trouble with a stand of 281 for the fourth wicket with Pettini, whose own hundred was his second of the campaign. After tea, Cosgrove flicked a boundary to reach three figures in 167 balls, taking him over 900 Championship runs in the season. But he fell for 111 trying to pull Azharullah - he only found mid-on - shortly before the second new ball.Pettini was very patient after the second break but eventually seized on the chance to twice pull Richard Gleeson into the leg side fence to raise his hundred in 189 balls. The pair saw Leicestershire take control of the day in the afternoon session where they added 151 runs in 36 overs. It was fairly unspectacular with few memorable shots, yet exactly what the visitors were looking for having won the toss.Northamptonshire toiled as their early success was undone but did respond with the secondd new ball with Gleeson removing Niall OBrien lbw for 5 and 78 runs came in 32 overs of the final session. Nike Just Do It Shoes Canada. Before then, Cosgrove, first to his half-century, in 90 balls with eight fours, found good touch having survived two loose hooks that fell short and then wide of long leg. He was joined by Pettini, whose own fifty took 85 balls and nine fours - the last of which a thick outside edge to third man.It was frustrating for Northants who were in control in the morning session with three wickets for Ben Sanderson reducing Leicestershire to 61 for 3.Fresh from a 10-wicket haul at Swansea, Sanderson picked up wickets in three consecutive overs in the middle of an 11 over spell from the Wantage Road end. All three came in similar fashion with straightening deliveries to take outside edges behind the wicket.First Paul Horton, after five boundaries, edged to Adam Rossinton at first slip, Angus Robson - after a very patient 10 in 56 balls - got a thicker edge to Rory Kleinveldt at third, before Neil Dexter received Sandersons best delivery, a lifted that took the shoulder of the bat to wicketkeeper David Murphy. LOS ANGELES -- UCLA is poised to unveil the strongest recruiting class coach Steve Alford has brought to Westwood, led by Lonzo Ball and T.J. Leaf.Their arrival comes just in time. The Bruins were 15-17 last season, only the schools fourth losing season since John Wooden arrived in 1948. Alford, who wasnt a popular hire four years ago, returned a one-year contract extension he signed after his first season and wrote an apology letter to fans. Now, hes hoping Ball, Leaf and fellow freshman Ike Anigbogu are the answer to getting the Bruins back to the postseason.Alfords challenge lies in blending the talented trio with veterans like his son Bryce, fellow senior Isaac Hamilton and junior big man Thomas Welsh while improving the Bruins defense that has never been ranked higher than eighth under him.We messed around with doing too many different things last year, Alford said Wednesday. Last year for the first time in a long time with my teams, we didnt get better month to month. Thats what was frustrating and we ended up having a bad year. Now what do you do moving forward? How do you handle that adversity? The Bruins return most of their roster, with the exception of Tony Parker who graduated and Jonah Bolden who left school over the summer to pursue a pro career. The arrival of Ball brings to mind such previously hyped freshmen as Kevin Love, Kevon Looney and Shabazz Muhammad, all one-and-done players who made a mark during brief stays in Westwood.Theres going to be a lot of hype around you, but you got to reaalize that once you start college a lot of those things have nothing to do with anything, Alford said. The senior guard is used to taking the last shot with the game on the line and he has handled the bulk of the ball-handling the last two years. With Balls playmaking ability and passing skills, Alford can slide over to the `2 spot. Now I can finally get back to what I do best off the ball and having a guy like him will really help, Alford said. Hes probably the best passer Ive ever played with, along with Kyle Anderson. Hes going to bring a lot of different aspects that we havent had in a while. ' ' '
CINCINNATI -- Jonathan Lucroy missed the two-strike pitch but got the call. Nike MLB Jerseys For Sale . His next swing produced a home run that sparked a big inning.Lucroys two-run homer started Milwaukees five-run third inning, and the Brewers rolled to a 9-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night with their best offensive showing in nearly two months. The bottom two teams in the NL Central have split the first two games of their series.Lucroy connected off left-hander John Lamb (1-7) in the third as he continued taking advantage of the last-place Reds. The All-Star catcher is 14 for 31 (.452) against Cincinnati this season, with five of his 12 homers and 15 RBI.First, there was some controversy. Lucroy swung at a two-strike pitch that landed in the dirt, but plate umpire Quinn Wolcott heard a sound and called a foul tip, extending the at-bat. Replays indicated that Lucroy missed the ball, but the tip of his bat hit the plate, causing the sound. Lucroy initially thought his bat hit the ball but later realized hed hit only the plate.Reds manager Bryan Price immediately came out to argue but got nowhere. It was an honest mistake, Lucroy said. I dont blame (Price). I dont blame him at all. I really thought Id foul-tipped it. He (Wolcott) did, too. Thats one of those crazy things that happen during a game. When Price went out to change pitchers later during the long inning, he got into it again with the umpire, who gave him his third ejection of the season. There was more into it than that, and well leave it at that, Price said. Quinn does a great job. I have no problems with effort. We had a difference of opinion and it got out of hand.Lamb and reliever Keyvius Sampson needed 53 pitches to get through the inning as the Brewers sent 11 batters to the plate and piled up five hits, three walks and five runs for a 9-0 lead. Jimmy Nelson (6-7) faked a bunt and slapped a two-run single during the spurt.Thats something hes comfortable doing, his best offensive weapon, manager Craig Counsell said. The Brewers hadnt scored nine runs in a game since May 27, when they beat the Reds 9-5. He had been 0-4 with a 5.14 ERA in his last seven starts. Joey Votto had four of Cincinnatis nine hits.It felt good to be back to where I was early on, said Nelson, who has been working on pushing off harder with his legs during his delivery. Thats what we were known for around here a long time, coach Mike Gundy said. It makes it a lot easier for me to sleep when we know we can run the ball. And its a big reason the Cowboys, who finished with 334 yards rushing and 541 overall, can become Big 12 champions if they beat eighth-ranked Oklahoma in their regular-season finale after an open date.Oklahoma State scored on its only two drives in the third quarter to go ahead 24-6. The Pittsburgh Steelers are coming off their worst loss in 27 years while the Kansas City Chiefs are rolling into Heinz Field on Sunday (8:30 p. Steph Curry Shoes Outlet .m. ET) on a turnover-caused high. The Steelers were smashed on the road following a 34-3 setback in Philadelphia last Sunday. The Chiefs hammered the New York Jets 24-3, in a game in which the defense and special teams caused eight turnovers. Both teams enter this contest with a 2-1 mark but with a different feel and attitude. The Steelers seemingly could do nothing right last Sunday while the Chiefs had everything working in their favor. Well, unless you ask Kansas City head coach Andy Reid. Its important we enjoy this today and then get ourselves ready for the Steelers. We have a ton of room to improve -- absolutely. We have a lot of things we can take out of this and well do that work, Reid said after the win on Sunday. The one major advantage the Chiefs have on the Steelers is turnover ratio. Kansas City is plus-5 in that department, while the Steelers are minus-1. The Steelers defense has not been producing enough turnovers and the offense has coughed the football up too much.Running backs seem to have the Steelers number. In Week 2, Cincinnati Bengals running back Gio Bernard had 100 receiving yards and a touchdown. Last week, Eagles running back Darren Sproles had six receptions for 128 yards, including a 73-yard touchdown. There is room for improvement all around, whether its the pass rush, not tackling well, not rallying to screens better, not winning third downs. We got our (butts) kicked. Ill simply say it like that. I got my (butt) kicked. We all got our (butts) kicked. Were going to learn from it, defensive end Cam Heyward said. One positive way the Steelers can look at the lopsided defeat is the Chiefs run virtually the same offensive system as Philadelphia. Eagles head coach Doug Pederson brought the offensive scheme to Philadelphia from Kansas City, where he was the offensive coordinator during Andy Reids tenure. This should allow the young secondary for the Steelers to study the mistakes they made and correct them going up against a similar styled opponent.Until you stop stuff like that, Steelers linebacker Arthur Moats said, its a copycat league. Theyre going to see we have to tackle better against the screen. Were totally expecting that, but we put that out there, and its going to be on us to rectify that situation,Those comments were directed toward players like rookie cornerbacks Artie Burns and Sean Davis. Both missed numerous tackles in Philadelphia. Veterans Ross Cockrell and Mike Mitchell both need to be held more accountable as well in stopping the opponents passing attack. The Steelers secondary has not been productive at all and has allowed over 300 yards passing in all three of the games played this season.A secondary member that has been playing lights out this season for the Chiefs is second-year cornerback Marcus Peters. The 2015 first-round selection already has an NFL-best four interceptions on the season and has tackled well in space. The matchup versus Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown will be one to watch on Sunday night. Brown is fourth in the NFL with 305 receiving yards on 24 receptions, though half of those catches were versus the Eagles in the blowout loss. Brown can stretch the field and Peters loves to play physical, so this will be a highlighted battle in Week 4.This game also marks the return of Pittsburgh running back LeVeon Bell from his three-game suspension for violating the league drug policy. Most seasons this would be the opening headline but Bells replacement, DeAngelo Williams, has played solid in his stead. Williams is seventh in the NFL in rushing with 258 yards. This two-headed attack will be looking to have even better success versus a Chiefs rushing defense that is average. Kansas City gives up 123 yards a game on the ground. The Steelers need to attack the interior of the Chiefs defense behind center Maurkice Pouncey and guard David DeCastro, both former first-round selections for the Steelers. The Chiefs have been without the Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles for the first three game, as he recovers from knee surgery. But the running back-by-committee approach of Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West has been solid for Kansas City. Neither runner has the skill set of Charles, but the Chiefs average 4.2 yards a rush with three runs over 20 yards. Steph Curry Shoes Free Shipping .C. Lions has come to an end. After Mondays hard-fought loss, the wait seemed longer than usual. Getting set to go their separate ways for a short Christmas break, the Raptors coach credited his team for their effort on a seemingly impossible three-game road trip, urging them to build on that success when they get back to work at the end of the week.St Helens withstood a late fightback from Warrington Wolves to secure a 25-22 win over the Super League leaders at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. Saints looked to have the game won when they led 25-14 with eight minutes to go, but two Wolves tries in five minutes left the visitors hanging on desperately for a hard-fought but ultimately deserved victory.Warrington remain top, but they could be replaced by Wigan Warriors on Sunday depending on their result against Wakefield Wildcats. Frenchman Theo Fages led the way for Saints, as Kieron Cunninghams side secured their sixth successive win at Warrington. Kevin Penny scores a superb try to give Warrington the lead against St Helens in Super League The Wolves actually outscored their visitors by four tries to three, but they managed just one conversion and spurned the last kick of the match in a bid to save time as they went in search of a match-winning score. It was a victory against the odds, with the visitors missing eight front-line players through injury, and 20-year-old second rower Jack Ashworth was among their try-scorers on only his second Super League appearance.Cunningham also gave a debut to 19-year-old winger Jake Spedding in the absence of an entire threequarter line, while Warrington had the luxury of being able to slot England utility back Stefan Ratchford in at scrum-half in place of an injured Chris Sandow. St Helens claimed victory at Warrington for thr sixth game in a row Warrington had blown Wigan away in the first half of their previous game and they looked set to stage a repeat performance after storming into a 10-0 lead inside 11 minutes.Ratchfords inch-perfect high kick to the corner was plucked out of the air by winger Kevin Penny for the first try and prop Ashton Sims short pass got centre Ryan Atkins crashing through the Saints defensive line for the second.Veteran England forward Ben Westwood, a surprise choice as kicker, added one conversion to make it 10-0 but Saints emerged from their early lethargy in impressive fashion to dominnate large periods of the remainder of the first half. Steph Curry Shoes Deals. Ben Currie (left) scored a try for Warrington but ended up on the losing side Stand-off Fages, a close-season signing from Salford who has had to wait for his chance to impress at his new club, did so in front of the Sky Sports cameras.Replacement prop Kyle Amor proved unstoppable from 10m out after supporting a jinking run from full-back Shannon McDonnell and Fages short pass got Ashworth charging over for Saints second try.Luke Walsh converted both to edge his side into a 12-10 lead and they had chances to increase it before a break from deep inside his own half by Penny set up the position for Ben Currie - a second rower playing at centre in the absence of Rhys Evans - to force his way over for a solo try in the final act of the first half.Saints stayed positive, though, continuing to look the more lively side after the break and it was no surprise when they regained the lead, another accurate pass from Fages this time getting centre Matty Dawson over for their third try. All the reaction to St Helens 25-22 win over the Warrington Wolves in Super League The Wolves were forced into some desperate defence to keep the visitors at bay as the game developed into a war of attrition.St Helens captain Jon Wilkin was forced off on 64 minutes after taking a knock to the head, an incident that prompted referee Ben Thaler to place Atkins on report, and Walsh kicked the resulting penalty to edge his side further ahead. The visitors looked to have secured the points when substitute Morgan Knowles pounced for a third try after Walshs grubber kick had eluded full-back Matty Russell, with Walsh adding the goal and slotting over a drop goal eight minutes from the end. That extra point was to prove crucial as Currie sent Penny over for his second try a minute later.Had Kurt Gidley added the goal, the Wolves would have been within a score, but he was just wide and Tom Linehams try two minutes from the end proved too little, too late as Saints deservedly hung on for the win. ANAHEIM, Calif. Wholesale MLB Jerseys . -- Matt Dominguez took no offence when the Angels intentionally walked a .247-hitting catcher so they could pitch to him in the seventh inning of a tie game. After all, playing for the Houston Astros these days is filled with all types of indignities. On the very next pitch, Dominguez took a swing that thrilled his family and capped the Astros best week in a long while. Dominguez hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the seventh inning, and Houston won back-to-back series for the first time in nearly two months with a 7-5 victory over Los Angeles on Sunday. Dominguez tied his career high with four hits in his native Southern California, while L.J. Hoes had his first career homer among his three hits in the major league-worst Astros fourth win in six games. Dominguez homered after Angels reliever Juan Gutierrez (0-4) walked Carlos Corporan, and the Astros hung on to their seventh win over Los Angeles this season. "They just wanted a matchup, I think," said Dominguez, a San Fernando Valley native who left 15 tickets for family. "He hung the slider, and I got it good. Feels good. I guess they had confidence they could get me out more than they did Carlos. Thats how baseball is. No hard feelings or anything. Ill just go up and try to do what I can." Slowly, the young Astros are getting things done. They scored 20 runs while taking two of three games at the Big A, winning with offence after a pitching-dominated series earlier in the week in Oakland, where they also took two of three from the Athletics. "At some point, were going to start to get our breaks," Houston manager Bo Porter said. "Were swinging the bats real well, and were getting good starting pitching." Brett Oberholtzer (3-1) blew an early three-run lead, but pitched six effective innings during Houstons sixth win in seven games at Angel Stadium. He gave up seven hits and struck out four in his fourth major league start, even retiring nine of his final 10 batters after Hamiltons tying homer. Oberholtzer attributes the Astros recent success to "staying loose. I think were playing with a little swagger, a little confidence about ourselves." Thats in short supply for the Angels (55-68), who have lost 11 of 16 and 23 of 34 -- yet Houston (41-82) is still 14 games behind Los Angeles for fourth place in the AL West. Mike Trout had two hits for the Angels before leaving in the sixth inning with right hamstring tightness. Josh Hamilton homered and tripled for Los Angeles to follow up his extra-inning homer Saturday night, while Mark Trumbo drove in three runs and hit his 28th homer late in the Angels sixth loss in eight games. "Its frustrating losing to anybody," said Hamilton, who delivered his 19th homer. "It doesnt matter who it is. If it was the Yankees in here today, or the Rangers, it would be just as frustrating. Its one of those things where youre playing a team with that kind of a record, but you dont want to relax or take anything for granted. Im not saying that were doing that, but some years, some teams have your number. Thats how it goes." Trout went 2 for 3 with a third-inning double, but left the game after flying out in the fifth. The Angels All-Star outfielder reached base for the 40th straight game, extending the majors longest current streak. "Its all right. Im just sore," said Trout, second in the AL at with a .333 average. "Its not like it popped or anything. It was just a little grabbing, so it shouldnt be too serious. ... Ill see how it is tomorrow. I came out just because I didnt want it to get worse. Its definitely frustrating when you cant be out there. For me as a speed guy, Ive got to take care of my legs." Houston boosted its lead to 7-3 in the eighth on Jose Altuves sacrifice fly. Trumbo trimmed the deficit with his two-run shot to left off Jordan Lyles, the Astros scheduled Monday starter, who pitched 2 1-3 innings of relief before leaving with two runners on in the ninth. Rookie Kevin Chapman got pinch-hitter Peter Bourjos to ground into a game-ending double play, earning his first career save. Jason Vargas recovered from an awful beginning to his first home start in two months to pitch into the sixth for the Angels, allowing seven hits -- all in the first three innings. The left-hander walked three and struck out three in his second start since returning from injury. Hoes homered in his 19th major league game, drilling a one-out shot in the first inning. NOTES: Lyles unexpectedly made his first relief appearance of the season. Porter said RHP Lucas Harrell will start the series opener at Texas on Monday night. ... Dominguez also had four hits July 31. ... Hamiltons triple was his first since May 21. ... Gutierrez, who made his major league debut with Houston in 2007, struck out four during his 1 2-3 innings. DETROIT -- Even the loss of their scheduled starter couldnt derail the Los Angeles Angels against the Detroit Tigers. Kirby Puckett Twins Jersey . Mike Trout homered and drove in three runs, and Erick Aybars two-run shot gave Los Angeles the lead for good as the Angels beat Detroit 7-4 on Wednesday night for their eighth consecutive win over the Tigers. The Angels have outscored the Tigers 55-21 during the streak. "If we knew what we were doing differently (against Detroit), wed probably try to do it against everybody else," catcher Mark Iannetta said. The Angels (35-43) and desperately trying to remain within hailing distance of Texas and Oakland in the A.L. West. Miguel Cabrera and former Angels outfielder Torii Hunter homered for Detroit. Tigers manager Jim Leyland doesnt think the streak has anything to do with how the teams match up. "I dont really believe in that," he said. "Its another team thats a good team, and theyve been swinging the bats very well lately. Theyre like everybody else. When they pitch good, they win games." Emergency Angels starter Billy Buckner gave up three runs and three hits in three- plus innings. He replaced Tommy Hanson, who was scratched after feeling tightness in his right forearm while warming up in the bullpen before the game. "Hes going to be evaluated and have some tests done (Thursday) and well see whats going on," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of Hanson. Buckner was pulled in favour of Dane De La Rosa after walking Jhonny Peralta and allowing Andy Dirks infield single to lead off the fourth. De La Rosa (2-1) got two quick outs before walking Austin Jackson to load the bases. But he fanned Hunter to end the inning with Detroit ahead 3-2. De La Rosa allowed a hit in two innings. "Torii is especially tough with runners in scoring position. Hes tough," Scioscia said. "Thats a big out right there." Scott Downs and Michael Kohn combined for two scoreless innings, and Kevin Jepsen gave up an unearned run on catcher Iannettas passed ball in the eighth. Ernesto Frieri pitched a scoreless ninth for his 18th save in 20 chances. "For our bullpen to respond the way they did . Buckner did what he could," Scioscia said. "The bullpen came in and gave us six strong innings." Detroit starter Jose Alvarez (1-1) allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings. He left the game after giving up Aybars two-run homer with two outs in the sixth that put Los Angeles ahead 4-3. Just after pitching coach Jeff Jones went to the mound, Aybar lofted Alvarezs first pitch just over the fence in left for his third homer, scoring Iannetta, who had singled with two out. The Tigers were trying to get one last out from Alvarez, who was made his third major league start, because of their struggling bullpen. "If he just kept him in the ballpark, gets a base hit, we had (Drew) Smyly set for (Brendan) Harris as we did anyway. We asked a lot of him," Leyland said. "He got the first two quick outs and then of course base hit and the home run. He did a terrific job. It wasnt his fault. He was a little spent, theres no question about that." Los Angeles added three in the seventh against Smyly on Trouts RBI double, Josh Hamiltons groundout and Alberto Callaspos run-scoring single. The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first on back-to-back homers by Hunter and Cabrera. Hunter, who played for the Angels the previous five seasons before signing a two-year contract with Detroit, drove Buckners 3-2 pitch into the left-centre field stands for his fourth home run. Cabrera then lined a 2-0 pitch over the fence in left for his 22nd home run and second in two days. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Victor Martinez doubled with two outs but was stranded when Peralta sent Trout to the warning track in left-centre to haul in his drive. Trout tied it with a two-run homer in the third. After J.B. Shuck led off with a double, Trout sent Alvarezs 2-1 pitch over the fence in left for his 13th homer. Prince Fielders run-scoring single gave Detroit a 3-2 lead in the third. His liner to right brought home Hunter, who led off with a double. NOTES: Shuck, the Angels left fielder, ran into shortstop Aybar, and both players fell as Aybar caught Dirks pop up in short left for the first out of the second. Aybar held onto the ball but lost one of his shoes. Neither player was injured. ... Leyland said RHP Anibal Sanchez, who is on the DL with a right shoulder strain, is "coming along fine," but couldnt say when Sanchez will start again. Alvarez started in Sanchezs slot. ... Los Angeles 2B Howie Kendrick didnt play because he fouled a ball off his foot on Tuesday. ... Scioscia said he hoped CF Peter Bourjos will return to the lineup on Thursday. Bourjos has missed two games after leaving Sundays game because of a jammed left thumb. ... Thursdays scheduled starters are Jered Weaver (1-4, 4.65 ERA) for the Angels against Doug Fister (6-5, 3.66). ... Cabrera made his third error in two games at third base. His line drive in the seventh went off the buttock of Angels pitcher Michael Kohn. "It hit me on the meaty part," said Kohn, who picked up the ball and threw Cabrera out at first. NEW YORK -- The lawyer who helped overturn Ryan Brauns drug suspension last year has been added to Alex Rodriguezs legal team. NMD Human Race Australia . David Cornwell has joined Jay Reisinger to represent Rodriguez in baseballs drug investigation, a person familiar with the hiring said Friday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement was authorized. His hiring was first reported by ESPN. Cornwell successfully argued the grievance filed by the players association on behalf of Braun, whose positive drug test was thrown out by an arbitrator in February 2012 because the collector of the urine sample didnt take it directly to a Federal Express office on a Saturday evening, instead storing it at home until the following Monday. Anthony Bosch, head of the now-closed Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic, agreed this week to co-operate with MLBs investigation. Rodriguez, Braun and more than a dozen other players have been linked to the clinic, which was accused in January by the Miami News Times of providing banned performance-enhancing drugs. Bosch was to meet Friday in Miami with MLB officials, another person familiar with the investigation said, also on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized. MLB sued Biogenesis, Bosch and five others in March. The case file in Floridas Circuit Court for Miami-Dade County showed that MLB lawyers issued subpoenas to UPS and Metro PCS asking for records, in addition to document demands made on Federal Express, AT&T Mobility and T-Mobile USA. UPS spokesman Dan McMackin said the company "responds to all lawfully issued subpoenas." Metro PCS did not respond to an email and phone message seeking comment. The court file also showed former University of Miami pitching coach Lazaro Collazo objected to having his deposition taken by MLB lawyers because he said he had no connections with Biogenesis and Bosch and he had no documents relevant to the subpoena. Collazo filed a motion saying he was interviewed at his home by Neil Boland, MLBs vice-president for information security, and MLB labour lawyer Patrick Houlihan, which Collazos motion said was an encounter "fraught with intimidation, coercion, embarrassment and repeated questioning" about Biogenesis. Collazo claimed the deposition was an effort to "annoy and harass" him. "They did no such thing," MLB executive vice-president Rob Manfred said Friday. The deposition was cancelled May 28. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- If a quarterback wants to keep Denvers devastating pass rush at bay, it seems his only option is to hand the ball off to his running back.Andy Dalton stayed upright while throwing just eight times in the first half Sunday, but once the Broncos adjusted to stuff the run, he was forced to drop back.Thats when Von Miller picked up his NFL-best fifth sack and Shane Ray became the first player in 14 years to collect three sacks in his first NFL start as the Broncos (3-0) beat the Bengals 29-17 .I think it was obvious that they were trying to keep Von off of their quarterback, Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said. ... But we hung in there. They key was us coming back in the second half and stopping the run. If we dont stop it, were probably in for a long day.The Broncos dropped a safety into the box and inched their linebackers closer to the line of scrimmage after getting gashed for 75 yards in the first quarter, including Jeremy Hills 50-yard run on Cincinnatis opening drive. Cincinnati managed only 68 yards rushing in the last three quarters.Eventually, we got them in a position where we could start rushing and we were able to capitalize on it, Ray said. The Broncos (3-0) will surely work on their run defense this week as they prepare to travel to Tampa Bay (1-2) to face QB Jameis Winston next weekend.A teams No. 1 option with us is that they want to come in and run the ball. They feel like if they can beat us with the run, then they can save their quarterbacks, Ray said. But we make good adjustments and corrections.Kubiak isnt just concerned about Denvers trouble with whats known as the C gap, the lane between the tackle and the tight end, but with quarterbacks breaking free on third down.Weve been giving up some quartterback movement, Kubiak said. Adidas Superstar White Australia. Like Andrew Lucks 21-yard scramble on third-and-20 two weeks ago.Its being more gap disciplined on third down, Ray said. Teams know that were playing man coverage so quarterbacks start trying to get out of the pocket. When they see that lane, they take off running. We see that, we know whats going on, were just going to go to the film room and see what we can do to counter that and well get back to doing what we do.Safety T.J. Ward said the Broncos will have their run defense and QB corralling issues settled by Sunday. Its hard to find a crack this defense, Ward said. You can try to do something from last week that a team had a little success on, but were probably going to fix that and be ready for it the next week. You have to come up with something creative. Thats hard because even if you have a scheme, you still have to beat us one-on-one. You have to block Von, you have to get open on Chris (Harris Jr.) and Aqib (Talib). You have to get open on me. You have to stop the blitz and you have to protect.Fixing the flaws are a matter of pride, Ward said.We were at Vons house last night after the game reviewing the tape -- me, Talib, Von and K-Web (Kayvon Webster), Ward said. Before we even get in the meeting room, for them to tell us where we made mistakes, we already know. Thats the next level if you want to be great. Roberto Luongo enters the 2013-14 season as the Canucks number-one netminder. Sergio Romo Twins Jersey . Its a position he did not enjoy entering the lockout-shortened 2013 season. Embroiled in a long battle for playing time with fellow netminder Cory Schneider that dates back to before the Canucks 2011 Stanley Cup Final run, Luongo spent the better part of the past 12 months addressing trade speculation. However, at last months NHL Draft, Canucks general manager Mike Gillis would make a shocking move - dealing Schneider instead of Luongo. The deal netted the Canucks the ninth overall pick - which they would use to select Bo Horvat - and handed the net firmly back over to Luongo for the foreseeable future. Speaking at the Vancouver Canucks Summer Summit - an event organized by the Canucks for its fans to update them on team business and news - Gillis was asked immediately about his decision to deal Schneider. “What happened could have been the result all the way through,” Gillis said of the decision to deal Schneider. “At the end of the day we had to make a choice and we made the choice to go to Roberto.” The choice was a surprise to many, so much so that Gillis travelled to Florida to have a face-to-face visit with Luongo at his home to discuss his role moving forward. Gillis recount of that conversation was one of a changed Luongo, the same player that has become a loose and candid person with the media and fans alike. “Its been a remarkable transformation,” Gillis said of Luongos shift from the end of 2011 to now. “He felt that after that [2011 Stanley Cup Final] series happened he was blamed more than others or that he was held accountable more than others.” However, Gillis would reiterate that hes comfortable with Luongo as his starter and also stated his belief that his goaltender would also be representing Canada at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. "Roberto will be our starting goalie," Gillis added. "I feel very optimistic about it." Other issues addressed at the summit included the hopes that the roof will be open at B.C. Place Stadium when the Vancouver Canucks host the Ottawa Senators in the Heritage Classic in March. "If worse comes to worse and it needs to be a covered facility, itll be a covered facility," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said. "We hope thats not the case." Daly fielded questions ahead of Gillis and spoke of the Heritage Classic, amongst other league business like officiating, the health of the League and the possibility of an NHL franchise in Seattle. "I think theres a willingness to consider (expansion)," said Daly. Seattle was seen as a popular destination for the troubled Phoenix Coyotes, who faced a possibility of relocation ahead of a Glendale City Council vote last month. The vote, however, wound up a positive one for the Coyotes, with the City approving a lease deal that could pave the way for the sale of the team to the Renaissance Sports and Entertainment Group. New head coach John Tortorella gave Canucks fans some unexpected news, unveiling two new assistant coaches in the question and answer period. Tortorella revealed that the team has added Mike Sullivan - with whom he worked with the New York Rangers - as well as former Dallas Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan as assistant coaches. Gulutzan spent two years behind the bench in Dallas, posting a 64-57-9 record. The Stars would miss the playoffs both years under Gulutzan, who was replaced last month by former Buffalo Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff. The team also announced at the summer summit that they would be honouring Canucks great Pavel Bure, by retiring his number 10 in a ceremony during this upcoming season. CAS said it will issue a ruling by July 21.Russia was suspended by the IAAF in November after a World Anti-Doping Agency report detailed widespread doping allegedly supported by the Russian state.
