The original Navajo, the T'aa dine' chose the Western part of America approximately six to seven centuries ago. They were a nomadic group that lived along side with the Anasazi or pueblo Indians until their disappearance. It is believed the T'aa dine' or Navajo Indians learned much from their neighbors, the Pueblo Indians. One of the greatest used skills was weaving using cotton and native grasses.

When the Spanish began exploring this same area around the 16th century. After the Spanish took over and along with the Catholic Church the traditional art of the pueblo dwellers and the Navajo was almost brought to a standstill.

Because the Navajo didn't want to be controlled by the Spanish they moved deep into the high country and from their vantage point they started raiding the Pueblo and Spanish livestock. By this time they were accomplished weavers so it was easy for them to change their weaving material from cotton to sheep wool.

The Navajo continued their raids until approximately 1863, they were eventually permitted to return to their home land but everything had been burned out and they had to start over. They started out weaving again but not on the belt loom, the original loom of the Pueblo Indians. The Navajo had started weaving on a vertical loom, the patterns were a combination of the Pueblo, Spanish and the Navajo's own ideas. The Navajo's best known work was the "Massacre Cave Blanket" from Canyon de Chelly. It was an all wool blanket and it was dated around 1804 and found in the ruins of the massacre of the Navajo during the raids of Kit Carson.

Before 1850 there are few examples of the Navajo blankets and rugs, but following 1850-1880 there are many beautiful pieces. The Navajo was introduced to bayeta, it was a famous red dye from Mexico, although the Navajo rarely used it on homespun weaving's because of the cost. They did, however, unraveling other Mexican weaving's to retrieve the red dyed pieces for reuse.

During the late 1800's through the 1920's there was a change from weaving blankets to rugs and tapestries. This can be attributed to two men, Lorenzo Hubble and J.B. Moore of the Crystal Trading Post. Both men were vital in designing different shape and borders in to rugs for the Navajo to weave. This worked well for the Navajo and satisfied the Eastern U.S. fashion.

In the early 19th century the Navajo rug industry went downhill due to the government hoping to increase the meat production in the Navajo tribe. They brought in a French Rambouillet sheep, their wool was short and oily and was not good for weaving. The U.S. government, Department of Agriculture established the Navajo Sheep Breeding Lab at Ft. Wingate, there they were able to breed a sheep with better quality of wool.

Rug weaving by hand after the 1940's slowed down tremendously because of the hours it takes to create a blanket or rug, the price to purchase one of these handmade treasures was more than many could afford. There are still a few Navajo that hand weave more for the rewards of creating the art than for money. For the Navajo weaving is not a dying art, it is becoming more selective and competitive.

The Amish are also still hand weaving rugs, place mats, and table runner from a free- standing wooden rug loom. Because the Amish waste very little they have even created a rag rug from their old clothing. You can still purchase the Amish rugs for a very reasonable price.

This has been very compact and general but you can see how the early Indians played a great part in our American History of rug weaving.
