MINNEAPOLIS - No. Discount Nike Shoes Uk . 15 Mizzou Volleyball saw its season come to a close with a Sweet 16 loss at No. 2 Minnesota, 3-1 (15-25, 25-21, 19-25, 14-25), on Friday evening at the Sports Pavilion, the home court of the second-seeded Gophers. Mizzou was led by 20 kills and a double-double from senior OH Carly Kan (Honolulu, Hawaii) who finishes her career with 1,677 kills and 1,445 digs, ranking second and fourth, respectively, in school history. Mizzou finishes the season 27-6 while Minnesota goes to 28-4.Kan and the Mizzou senior class - MB Emily Thater (Springfield, Mo.), RS Julia Towler (Blue Springs, Mo.) and L Alexa Ethridge (Blue Springs, Mo.) - finish their careers as the winningest four-year class in school history with 105 wins. They won a pair of SEC Championships and went to three NCAA Tournaments. The 27 wins on the year are the fifth-most in school history and the senior class has three of the top five win totals in school history.Junior OH Melanie Crow (Wildwood, Mo.) added 12 kills, seven digs and two blocks and Thater pitched in seven kills on .278 hitting with two blocks and a pair of aces. Ethridge posted 19 digs, just missing her third 20-dig outing of the year, but it was her best four-set total of the season. Junior setter Courtney Eckenrode (The Woodlands, Texas) posted her seventh double-double of the season with 36 assists and 11 digs. The second-seeded Gophers ran out to an 8-4 lead early in the first set despite Mizzou getting a pair of early blocks. The Tigers made three uncharacteristic attack errors in the stretch, forcing Coach Kreklow to call timeout. Minnesota kept the foot on the gas to go up 15-7, but Mizzou cut the lead to 15-12 using back row attacks from Kan. But as quick as Mizzou got back into it, Minnesota ran off a 5-0 run and that put the set away with the Gophers taking the first frame, 25-15.Mizzou played better to open the second frame behind the attack of Kan and opened a 13-10 lead after a pair of strong serves from Kira Larson (Fargo, N.D.). Mizzou grew the lead to 14-10 out of the timeout following a kill by Emily Thater (Springfield, Mo.), but Minnesota scored the next five points and wound up on top 17-16. Mizzou then got back-to-back kills from Kan and Crow and an ace from Thater to open a 19-17 lead. The trading of runs continued as Minnesota tied the set at 19-all after a pair of kills, but Mizzou answered right back and that stole momentum, taking set two, 25-21.Following the break, Minnesota raced out to an 8-3 lead as it connected for kills on its first six swings. Mizzou fought to get back into the set and got as close as 14-10, but the Gophers sided out from there and won the third, 25-19. Minnesota kept it going in the fourth set and ran away with a 25-14 set win to close out the match. With the short-handed Warriors needing help from someone -- anyone -- to stop a three-game skid, ONeal returned from right knee and groin injuries that had sidelined him for four games and put up season highs with 18 points and eight rebounds. It was just enough to help lift Golden State to a 102-101 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday night. http://www.nikeshoescheapuk.com/ . -- Brandon Jennings made the most of his first game with the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night. NOBODY THOUGHT IT would be his last, least of all him. On July 18, Alex Rodriguez hit a second-inning solo shot off Baltimore Orioles pitcher Kevin Gausman deep into the left-field seats at Yankee Stadium. It was only A-Rods ninth homer of the year, but it was also the 696th of his career, and it gave the New York Yankees a 1-0 lead en route to a 2-1 victory. After the game, he told reporters, Im getting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.Turns out it was a train. Last week, the Yankees pressured him into retiring after Fridays game, when he still could hit another. Or he could decide to come back at a later date. But for now, he remains tantalizingly close to joining Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth as the only members of the 700 Club. For some of the games greatest hitters, farewells dont always end well. Parting is such sweet sorrow and all that, but theres little poetry in balls, or players, reaching the warning track.Thats something to keep in mind as 40-year-old David Ortiz tries to finish what he says will be his last season with a bang?(528 HRs and counting); as Prince Fielder is forced to call it quits with 319 homers (same as his father, Cecil); as Mark Teixeira (404 ... do I hear 405?) takes a final bow. And as A-Rod, who just turned 41, hangs em up. In announcing his retirement, A-Rod said, As far as 700 or those types of milestones, look, I would have had an unbelievable fun time trying to go after them. ... [But] those are not the cards I was dealt. If Friday is indeed his last game, and No. 696 was his last homer, its worth replaying his trot around the bases.?As he circled the bases against the Orioles, Rodriguez blew a chewing gum bubble. As it always does, the bubble burst.SOME DAY, A-ROD will go to Cooperstown. Six days after his home run, the honors belonged to Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza. This year, as usual, the hamlet was crawling on induction weekend with gods, some in a higher pantheon than others, but all adored by their worshippers. Its as good a time and place as any to dust off the memories.George Brett, No. 317. The man in a golf shirt, shorts and Kansas City Royals ankle socks is about to tee off on the sixth hole of the Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown, New York. Its the annual golf tournament that precedes the ceremonies, and while Brett waits his turn, he is asked to go back to Sept. 26, 1993 -- the day he hit his 317th, and last, home run.Refresh my memory, he says. No, wait, its coming back to me. ... It was a 10th-inning, two-out game winner against the Angels in Kansas City. High fastball into the balcony in right.Brett then hits his tee shot straight down the middle, and, as he drives off down the fairway, he shouts, Hey, that was my second homer of the game. After his round, he asks, Who did I hit it off of? Paul Swingle.Greg Swindell? It couldnt have been him. This guy was a right-hander. Yes, he was, but his name was Paul Swingle. S-w-i-n-g-l-e.Oh. I dont remember him. And who gave up my first homer in that game? John Farrell. The Red Sox manager? Really? Thats kind of neat.Neater still was that the home runs came on the day after Brett had tearfully announced his retirement. When that Sunday game ended with his walk-off, his line in the box score read: Brett 5-3-3-5.As he says, I got to be George Brett for one more day.Mike Schmidt, No. 548. Fate is funny. With the fifth pick of the second round of the 1971 draft, the Royals selected a shortstop named George Brett. Right after that, with the sixth pick, the Philadelphia Phillies also went for a shortstop: Mike Schmidt. They would become the greatest third basemen of their generation, making 25 All-Star Games between them. They went head-to-head in the 1980 World Series, won by the Phillies, and Schmidt would win three MVPs, two more than Brett. But when it came to their final home runs, Brett got the better deal.Schmidts was a two-run homer off Jim Deshaies in the first inning of a May 2, 1989 game at the Vet -- it gave the Phillies a 2-1 lead in a game they would lose 12-4. It was a high fastball that I hit down the left-field line, Schmidt says. It barely stayed inside the foul pole. I had no idea at the time that it would be my last.Nearly a month later, Schmidt broke down at his retirement news conference.Looking back, the only reason to have delayed my retirement would have been the career numbers: I was two short of 550 home runs and five short of 1,600 RBIs -- one good game. But I was feeling my age, the team was in transition, and I had what I thought were Hall of Fame credentials and enough money. Im actually very comfortable with how my career ended and how my retirement played out. I even have the home run ball in a case at home.I just wish Id have written a better goodbye speech.Frank Thomas, No. 286. There were two Frank Thomases in Cooperstown. There was one who was in the Hall of Fame, and then there was the large hulking man signing photos and balls at a card table on Main Street. The other Frank Thomas is an 87-year-old Pittsburgh native who played for seven National League teams over 16 seasons. When fans tell him how good it is to see him alive, he tells them, Well, its a lot better to be seen than to be viewed.Thomas was a pretty good slugger in his day, not to mention the Home Run King of New York in 1962 (he hit 34 for the original Mets, while Roger Maris hit 33 and Mickey Mantle 30 for the Yankees). Asked about his final homer, Frank has to think. I dont remember much about it. Wait, I was with the Astros, and it was against the Mets. And it got me traded! It was Aug. 31, 1965, at Shea Stadium, and, like Brett, Thomas hit his last two home runs in the same game. In fact, the right-handed-hitting first baseman provided all of the Astros offense in a 4-3 victory, with a three-run bomb off Larry Miller in the first inning with Joe Morgan and Jimmy Wynn aboard and a solo shot in the third off Darrell Sutherland. The next day, they sent me to my old pals on the [Atlanta] Braves for a player to be named later, Thomas says. I guess they figured I had something left. No more homers, but I got to play the last month of the season with Hank [Aaron] and Eddie [Mathews] again. Joe Torre and Phil Niekro, too. Thats four Hall of Famers right there. That was my reward, I guess.Frank Thomas, No. 521. The Big Hurt was also in town, looking as imposing as ever beside his plaque, which has him in his White Sox hat. But it didnt end well for him in Chicago: He was hurt big when the club released him after winning the 2005 World Series. He signed with the Oakland As and hit another 39 in 06, then 26 more as the Toronto Blue Jays DH in 07. Then the fly balls started coming up short. On Aug. 9, 2008, back on the As and playing at Comerica Park, Thomas hit one last home run, a two-out, first-inning shot to left-center off Armando Galarraga. He played 18 more games that season, then went into denial, refusing to announce his retirement. Finally, on Feb. 12, 2010, Thomas officially called it quits by signing a one-day contract with the White Sox, who announced that they would be retiring his No. 35. At the news conference, he said, For some reason, it seems like there is never a happy ending to superstars careers. They end up playing for other teams -- but they always end up coming back.Had he hit one more home run, Thomas would be alone at No. 20 on the all-time list. But hes in very good company with 521, tied with Willie McCovey and ...Ted Williams, No. 521. Standing sentinel on the first floor of Cooperstowns museum is The Splendid Splinter. His statue perfectly captures his lefty-swinging follow-through -- the same follow-through he used to hit his 521st homer off Jack Fisher in the eighth inning of a 5-4 comeback win over the Orioles. It was not only the last at-bat of his career but also the inspiration for one of the finest sports stories ever written. Here is how John Updike described the third pitch of the at-bat in Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu, which appeared in the Oct. 22, 1960, issue of The New Yorker:Like a feather caught in a vortex, Williams ran around the square of bases at the center of our beseeching screaming. He ran as he always ran out home runs -- hurriedly, unsmiling, head down, as if our praise were a storm of rain to get out of. He didnt tip his cap. ... The papers said that the other players, and even the umpires on the field, begged him to come out and acknowledge us in some way, but he never had and did not now. Gods do not answer letters.Al Kaline, No. 399. As Williams was to Boston, Kaline was to Detroit. Mr. Tigers final round-tripper was a ninth-inning, two-run homer off Reggie Cleveland in Fenway on Sept. 18, 1974, but it didnt mean much to the Tigers, who lost 8-5, or to Kaline at the time.I hardly recall it, says Kaline, who was at a cocktail reception in the Hall of Fame gallery, not far from the Williams figure. I do remember my home run off Steve Carlton in the 1968 World Series and my 11th-inning homer off Rollie Fingers in the 72 ALCS. But I never really tried to hit home runs. I was more concerned with getting to 3,000 hits. That was the mark I was really after. ... It wasnt until Yaz came along that I really realized the significance of 400 home runs.Kaline did get his 3,000th hit, in his hometown Baltimore, and five years later, Carl Yastrzemski recorded both. Indeed, its right there on his plaque: FIRST AMERICAN LEAGUER TO HAVE 400 HOME RUNS AND 3,000 HITS.Roberto Clemente, No. 240. He hit it on Sept. 13, 1972, and it was his 10th homer of the season. Seventeen days later, he got the 3,000th hit of his career. Who could have known they would be the last of each -- Clemente died in a plane crash on New Years Eve, en route to delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. What a shock, says Ferguson Jenkins, the Hall of Famer who gave up the Hall of Famers final home run. I loved facing Roberto, and believe me, we faced each other a lot over the years. It was the sixth time Clemente had homered off Jenkins. The only other pitcher to give up as many as six to Clemente was Sandy Koufax. I remember it like it was yesterday, Jenkins says. Wrigley Field, seventh inning, right? Man on and two outs, score tied 3-3. He was a bad-ball hitter, so I tried to throw it off the plate, get him to chase. I forget the count, but I threw it inside, and he hit it over the ivy in left. You win some, you lose some, and that one I lost.Because this was the 25th anniversary of Fergies induction, he invited his family up to Cooperstown. He showed them the Clemente statue in the museum.Steve Garvey, No. 272. When he retired in 11988, there was no way Garvey wasnt going into the Hall of Fame -- not with his 10 All-Star appearances, his . Cheap Nike Shoes. 338 batting average in 11 postseason series, the National League record for most consecutive games played (1,207).But his numbers were diminished by the sluggers of the steroid era, and his once angelic reputation was tarnished by a soap operatic personal life. Now Garvey is stuck in purgatory, and, on this HOF weekend, he is sitting at the same table in the same souvenir shop with the devil himself, Pete Rose.Garveys last home run came on April 12, 1987, a three-run, first-inning homer off the Cincinnati Reds Guy Hoffman at Riverfront Stadium that gave the San Diego Padres a 3-0 lead en route to a 5-2 victory. One Hall of Famer, Tony Gwynn, scored ahead of Garvey, and another, Barry Larkin, watched it sail out of the park.It went into the seats in left-center, Garvey says. I didnt think it would be my last, but then, you never do.?Bicep tendinitis got to me, and I [missed the rest of the 1987 season]. I didnt know what became of the ball. But then a funny thing happened. Six or seven years ago, a box arrives in the mail. Its from one of the groundskeepers at Riverfront. Back in those days, you could buy game balls and stuff in the team store, and he bought the home run ball. I guess he saw the date and realized the significance. Eventually, he tracked me down and sent it to me because he thought I might like to have it.Its kind of special. Not so much because of its significance but more because a fan went out of his way to send me a gift he thought I might want.George Foster, No. 348. Right across the street from Garvey, in another souvenir store, is another man who thought he might be going to Cooperstown for a different reason. I really thought I would get 500, which would have gotten me into the Hall of Fame, Foster says. Just five more 30-homer seasons. But injuries got the best of me.When Foster hit 52 home runs for the 1977 Reds, only seven other players had hit more in a season. But after the Mets acquired him in 82, he went from great to good to gone: He and manager Davey Johnson locked horns, and he was released in August of 86. The White Sox picked him up, and it was for them that he hit No. 348, a solo shot in the fourth inning off Bill Wegman on Aug. 15. Two months later, his ex-teammates on the Mets won the World Series.Though his MLB career was soon over, Foster still had a little left in him: He reappeared in 1989 in the Senior Professional Baseball Association, where he hit 11 homers in 70 games for the St. Lucie Legends.Eddie Murray, No. 504. A final home run ball is worth saving. But sometimes circumstances prevent that. Murray was playing for the Angels on May 30, 1997, when he hit a solo shot in the second inning of a game the Minnesota Twins would win 4-3. It was off Bob Tewksbury to center field, he says. Thats about all I remember. I dont even know what happened to the ball. The funny thing is that, the year before, when I hit 22 for the Cleveland Indians and Baltimore Orioles, the balls kept bouncing back on the field, and people were collecting them for me. I think I have 19 of those. But that last one happened so early in the season that I had no idea it would be my last.Actually, that was not the last professional home run that Murray hit. Yeah, I hit two more that season for Albuquerque after the Dodgers picked me up. That was weird, me playing with all those kids. I have no idea who gave up my last one.Just for the record, it was a Phoenix pitcher named Mike Villano.Donora, Pennsylvania, No. 1,259. Seven hours west-southwest of Cooperstown is another baseball mecca, a town of 5,000 that, thanks to native sons Stan Musial, Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr., can claim more home runs per capita than any other place on earth. Together they hit 1,257 -- the other two came from Steve Filipowicz, a Donoran who had them for the 1945 New York Giants. The last one was hit by one of the men celebrated in this Cooperstown weekend, Ken Griffey Jr. It came on Oct. 3, 2009, in the bottom of the fourth inning of a game between the Rangers and Mariners at Safeco Field. Junior took Tommy Hunters 3-1 pitch deep to right field to give the Ms a 1-0 lead in a game they would win 2-1. At the time, it was his 19th homer of the season, the 630th of his career.Nineteen years and 595 home runs earlier, there was another date to remember: Sept. 14, 1990. Thats when the Griffeys homered back-to-back off the Angels Kirk McCaskill to become the first father-son combo to go yard in the same game. After touching home plate, Senior told Junior, Thats how you do it, son.Willard Brown, No. 1. Hes in the Hall of Fame for his hitting, baserunning and outfield play for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues. But he did play for the St. Louis Browns in 1947, and became the first African-American to hit a home run in the American League: an inside-the-park homer off future Hall of Famer Hal Newhouser of the Tigers on Aug. 13. It was also his last in the majors, and the last for the bat he used.It seems he had borrowed it from teammate Jeff Heath, who was so enraged at his presumption that he smashed the lumber to pieces in the dugout.Hank Aaron, No. 755, and Billy Williams, No. 426. Whats it like to give up a Hall of Famers last home run? Dick Drago knows. Pitching for the Angels, he gave up two in a two-week span.Aarons I knew about, Drago says. But I had no idea I also gave up Billys last one.The Aaron homer came first, 40 years ago on July 20, 1976, in County Stadium, a solo homer deep to left in the seventh inning of the Milwaukee Brewers 6-2 victory. It was a hanging slider. I tried to get cute. Not the best inning of my career -- I gave up a homer to George Scott when Hank was in the on-deck circle. Other than that, I dont remember much, just him circling the bases and me fuming on the mound. When was the Williams home run?Aug. 8, an eighth-inning solo shot in a 9-3 loss to the Athletics in Oakland.I did give up a few. I guess its kind of a distinction that I gave up Hank Aarons last. You know, we signed balls together a few years ago. But Ive never seen the actual ball.Therein lies a tale. A part-time groundskeeper named Richard Arndt caught the ball in the bleachers. Not knowing its future significance, he just wanted to give the ball to Aaron and maybe have his picture taken. But he was told that Aaron was busy and that he should hand the ball over. When he refused, he was fired.Later that season, Arndt tried to get Aaron to sign the ball, but the legend balked, saying the ball belonged to him. Over the years, Arndt entertained various offers for the ball, even some from Aaron and the Brewers. He finally sold it to a Connecticut portfolio manager for $655,000, a large chunk of which he gave to Aarons Chasing the Dream Foundation. (What, nothing for the guy who hung the slider? Drago says.)That ball is now on loan to the museum, in a third-floor exhibit called Hank Aaron: Chasing The Dream. As for the Williams ball, Billy had it once. I threw it in my baseball bag, he says. The next year, I was in Midland, Texas, looking at some hitters for the Cubs, and a kid asked me if I had any baseballs. That was the only one I had to give him.Barry Bonds, No. 762. Bonds hit two balls worth a lot of money. The first was the one he hit to pass Aaron, No. 756, an Aug. 7, 2007, homer off Mike Bacsik of the Nationals. It was caught at AT&T Park by college student Matt Murphy and sold to fashion designer Mark Ecko for $752,467.20 so that he could make a statement by engraving an asterisk on it. Thats now housed on the third floor of the HOF museum, in an exhibit called One For The Books: Baseball Records and the Stories Behind Them. The second was the last home run ball of Bonds career, a two-run homer off rookie Ubaldo Jimenez in the first inning of the Giants 5-3 win in Colorado on Sept. 5, 2007. (Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday actually asked that the homer be negated because of fan interference. You decide.)The fan who emerged from the scrum with the ball was Jameson Sutton, who put the ball in a safe-deposit box in the hopes that it would be Bonds last waltz around the bases. When Bonds retired without another home run, collectors predicted that Sutton would get as much $1 million for the ball.He sold it that offseason to an unnamed collector through SCP Auctions for $376,612. Sutton used the money to pay off the medical expenses of his stepfather, who had just died after a battle with lung cancer. That ball is not in Cooperstown. It remains to be seen whether Bonds himself will be there.Babe Ruth, No. 714. It was May 25, 1935, and the 40-year-old Bambino waddled up to the plate for the truly dreadful Boston Braves on a chilly Saturday afternoon before 10,000 curious Pittsburgh fans in Forbes Field. No longer wanted by the Yankees -- firewood had been stored in his spring training locker and No. 3 had been given to George Selkirk -- he signed with the Braves, who needed a turnstile draw.He came into the game batting .183. But in the first inning, he hit a two-run homer into the right-field stands off Red Lucas. That was 712. He gave the Braves a 4-0 lead with another two-run shot, this one off Guy Bush, in the third -- 713. The Pirates tied the score, but Ruth put the Braves back ahead 5-4 with an RBI single in the fifth. In the top of the seventh, with the home team back ahead 7-5 but the crowd behind him, Ruth took a mighty swing at Bushs 3-1 pitch ... and launched it clear over the right-field roof. No batter had ever done that in the 26-year history of the park: 714.In an article for the Society of American Baseball Research, Jack Zerby described the scene thusly: After rounding the bases in a 1935 version of his classic trot, Babe saluted the fans with a tipped cap, and then excused himself from the game. Sole access to the visiting clubhouse was through the Pittsburgh dugout. En route, he plopped himself down at the end of the bench and told rookie Pirate pitcher Mace Brown, Boy, that last one felt good. After going 4-for-4 with three homers and six RBIs that day, Ruth played five more games, but he never got another hit.The ball that Ruth hit for No. 714 is now part of the Hall of Fames touring exhibit, We Are Baseball, which is at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City until Aug. 21. Then its on to St. Louis. Thats the thing about last home runs. Long after the batter touches home, the ball is still traveling. ' ' '
CHARLOTTE, N. Vans Old Skool Best Price Uk .C. -- The Charlotte Bobcats have hired Los Angeles Lakers assistant Steve Clifford to become their new coach. Two people familiar with the situation said Monday that Clifford had agreed to a three-year contact. They spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the announcement has not been made public. Clifford replaces Mike Dunlap, who was fired after going 21-61 in his only season as coach. Clifford has worked as an assistant in New York, Houston, Orlando and Los Angeles, but has never been a head coach at the NBA level. He has worked under both Jeff and Stan Van Gundy. He becomes the sixth coach of the Bobcats since 2006-07. The Bobcats made the move to hire Clifford on Monday, one day before he was slated for a second interview with the Milwaukee Bucks for their coaching vacancy. Clifford came to Los Angeles with Dwight Howard from the Magic and was retained for the 2013-14 season as an assistant coach. However, the Lakers granted him permission to interview with other teams. Prior to joining the Lakers, Clifford spent five seasons with Orlando, working alongside Stan Van Gundy. During that five-year span, the Magic were 259-135 (.657) and reached the NBA Finals in 2009. Clifford also spent four seasons as an assistant with the Rockets under Jeff Van Gundy and three with the Knicks. Jeff Van Gundy, now an NBA broadcaster, said hes known Clifford since they coached together at the Jim Boeheim camp in 1985 in Syracuse, N.Y., and called him "a person with impeccable integrity." He also thinks hes going to be a pretty good NBA head coach because of the relationships he builds with players and fellow coaches. "Hes a brilliant basketball coach who relates to all kinds of people well and I think he will do an absolutely fantastic job with the talent at hand," Jeff Van Gundy said. "Im so happy for one of the good guys in the league to get this opportunity." Clifford has worked in North Carolina briefly before as an assistant coach for one year at East Carolina. The Bobcats fired Dunlap in April after just one season. Dunlap struggled with the transition from the college game to the NBA and game management. He often butted heads with his veteran players, which is likely one of the reasons the Bobcats decided to go after an experienced NBA assistant like Clifford. Bobcats president of basketball operations Rod Higgins said in mid-April he and general manager Rich Cho met with the players and Dunlap before approaching owner Michael Jordan and asking him to make a coaching change. "The change was allowed," Higgins said in April. Higgins said at the time player input was "a part of the process, but not the only indicator." Higgins was asked in April what he wanted in a new coach. "We want to hire a great leader, (and) the player development aspect is still vitally important to us because of our youth," Higgins said. "Obviously you want a fantastic X-and-O coach. Someone who can make our players better, and help us win games." The Bobcats seemed to place an emphasis on finding a defensive-minded coach after finishing near the bottom of the league in most defensive categories last season. Along with the Clifford, the Bobcats interviewed at least five other known candidates for the position. They spoke early on in the process to former Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns coach Alvin Gentry, Suns assistant Elston Turner, Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Nate Tibbetts and Houston Rockets assistant Kelvin Sampson. The Bobcats again considered former Lakers assistant Quin Snyder, now a head coach of a professional team in Russia. Snyder and Jerry Sloan were among the three finalists for the job last year that was given to Dunlap. Clearance Old Skool Uk . They had already blown a double-digit lead, fans were hitting the exits, and a long seven-game road trip waited at the end. The (11-11-4) Jets are seventh in the Central Division with 26 points. Fifth place Dallas and sixth-seeded Nashville also have 26 points, but the Stars have three games in hand on Winnipeg while Nashville has two. Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan appears set to continue with his halves experiment of swapping Chad Townsend and Jack Bird.Townsend cut a dejected figure on the Canberra Stadium sidelines after being hooked midway through the second half of the Sharks gutsy 16-14 NRL finals win over Canberra on Saturday.Feeling like he needed fresh legs on the park against a tiring Raiders pack, Flanagan made the bold call to bring off Townsend and replace him with outside back Gerard Beale, while pushing Bird into the halves.Flanagan said the move was just what the side needed at the time, with the ploy paying dividends as his side eked out a memorable win against the odds.Beale said Flanagan hadnt ruled making the same changes into the futurre. Cheap Vans Old Skool For Sale. I guess thats up to Flanno and whatevers happening at that moment, Beale said.I got to get in there which was good for me but every game is different and next game I could end up anywhere. While Townsend has earned plaudits for his contributions since arriving in the Shire from the Warriors, he had an off night against the Raiders and came up with costly errors.Flanagan was quick to address Townsends concerns in the sheds after the win and Beale said the No.7 had taken it in his stride.Hes been sweet, todays hes been all smiles and everyones happy to be back at training, Beale said. After the tragic death of Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernández on Sunday, there was an outpouring of grief and support around the baseball world. Cheap Air Max 97 For Sale . Teams and players saluted Fernández by writing tributes to him on their uniforms, and Marlins players all wore Fernándezs name and number for Monday nights game against the Mets. Following that game, the Marlins added a 16 memorial patch. The Marlins numerical tribute Monday night was unprecedented for a contemporary player (the only other MLB instance of everyone wearing the same number is the annual Jackie Robinson Day ritual, when all uniformed personnel wear No. 42), but the basic concept of memorializing a fallen comrade on an MLB uniform wasnt new or surprising. Its something weve come to expect. The surprising thing is that it used to be more the exception than the rule.Consider this: Big league baseball existed for nearly a century before the first memorial patch appeared in 1973. Up until then, a team only marked a notable death by wearing either black crêpe or black armbands. And the bar for being memorialized on a uniform during the armband was extremely high. When Lou Gehrig died in 1941 -- Lou Gehrig! -- the Yankees didnt wear an armband for him. Neither did any other team. The number of patches and other memorials has definitely increased over the years, said Tom Shieber, senior curator at the National Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, who charts the history and progression of uniform-borne memorials on the Halls website. Its a phenomenon that was a lot easier to keep track of in the old days than it is today. According to Shiebers records, only 10 MLB teams wore black memorial armbands in the 1950s and 60s combined. By comparison, at least eight MLB teams have worn memorial patches this season alone. And get this: There have already been more memorials appearing on MLB uniforms since the year 2000 than there were during the entire century of the 1900s.Whats the reason for the increased pace of uniform memorials? It appears that there are several explanations -- some logistical, some cultural and most of them interrelated:? Part of it is just a numbers game -- there are more teams and more players now than there were in, say, 1965. From a simple actuarial standpoint, that means there are more MLB-affiliated people who are, sadly, going to die, which in turn means there will be more situations that call for uniform memorials.? In addition, the scope of whos considered to be memorial-worthy has become much broader and more inclusive. Teams now routinely wear patches for deceased broadcasters, clubhouse managers, groundskeepers, minority owners, owners spouses, scouting directors and other figures who never would have been honored in years past.? Moreover, as sports teams have increasingly viewed themselves as part of the fabric of their local communities, uniform memorials have expanded to include the victims of natural disasters, mass shootings, or other public tragedies, as well as fallen civic and political leaders.? Culturally speaking, we now appear to be in a less stoic, more expressive era, where outward gestures of all sorts -- including expressions of grief or sympathy in response to death -- are much more common and acceptable than they used to be. One result of that is that the sports worlds default response to a death is to acknowledge it in some way on a uniform. Even the patches themselves have become more expressive, with simple numbers or initials often giving way to more elaborate designs. That spirit of expressiveness can even extend into the opposing dugout. In 2013, for example, the Angels wore a memorial patch for longtime team orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum. When the Mariners came to Anaheim for a three-game series in June of that year, several Seattle players wore the Yocum patch, creating the once-unthinkable scenario of players on one team wearing the patch of another team.? The explosion of sports media coverage, social media and jersey merchandising (and, um, uniform columnists) has led to much more attention being paid to small uniform details. One result of this is that fans now expect and sometimes even demand that a team respond to a death on its uniform.? Finally, the advent of digital design software and digitally driven embroidery machinery has made it much easier for patches to be designed and produced very quickly. What once took days can now often be done in hours, so adding a patch is much simple than it used to be.Add all of that together and you have our current remembrance-intensive uniform scene. But it took a while to get here. Black armbands didnt give way to memorial patches until 1973, when the Pirates wore a 21 patch for Roberto Clemente, who had died in a winter plane crash during a humanitarian mission. And even then, the Pirates took a series of steps before wearing the patch. They wore a simple strip of black fabric during spring training, then briefly covered the fabric with what appears to have been a paper cut-out (details on that part of the story are sketchy), and then finally adopted the regular patch. If you look again at the list of uniform memorials compiled by Shieber, the Hall of Fame curator, you can see that patches didnt immediately catch on in the wake of the Clemente patch. With a couple of exceptions, black armbands remained the standard for the next 10 years or so, until patches began to overtake them in the mid-1980s. Today the black armband is nearly extinct (perhaps it deserves its own memorial). The last team to wear one on an extended basis -- as opposed to a one- or two-game placeholder stint until a patch was ready to go -- was the 2012 Red Sox, who wore a black band for Johnny Pesky on their road jerseys but used a patch on their home and alternate jerseys. As uniform memorials have spread, theyve also become more personal, with players increasingly inclined to add their own memorial messaging to their uniforms, regardless of whether the team has added a patch. Technically speaking, this practice violates MLB uniform rules, but team and league officials tend to allow it these days. Most of these personal memorials take the form of handwritten notes on the players caps, but a few players have gotten more creative. After Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile passed away in 2002, for example, teammate Jason Simontacchi saluted him via a memorial ankle-band -- presumably the only such accessory ever worn in MLB history. And when another Cardinals pitcher, Josh Hancock, died in 2007, his former college teammate Tim Hudson, then pitching for the Braves, had Hancocks initials sewn onto his jersey.Still, no memorial gesture -- team-based, league-based, or personal -- can top what the Marlins did for Fernández on Monday night, with the entire team wearing his jersey. Itll be interesting to see if other teams do something similar when the next tragedy inevitably strikes. Heres hoping we have to wait a long time to find out.Would you like to nominate a uniform or uni element to be showcased in a future Friday Flashback installment? GLENDALE, Ariz. Air Jordan Cheap Authentic . -- Phoenix Coyotes general manager Don Maloney stood at a podium deep inside Jobing.com Arena and talked about his contract extension, his priorities over the next few months and the future of the organization. Just five miles down Glendale Avenue at City Hall, the NHLs hierarchy and a potential new ownership group met with members of the Glendale City Council to discuss a new arena lease agreement, the final hurdle in a four-year quest to keep the franchise in Arizona. Yes, both are encouraging steps toward finally giving the Coyotes some long-awaited stability. But with as many times as this saga has offered false hope in the past, it might be better to wait until all the papers have been officially signed before getting too excited. "The positive is that the NHL is meeting Glendale and there is going to be some sort of resolution in the weeks ahead," Maloney said during a news conference on Tuesday. "Whatever that means, we dont know, but we know were moving forward in that area." Maloney has been at the franchises helm for six seasons, the past four working with the financial and operational restraints of being run by the NHL. He was successful at pulling just the right strings, putting together a team that made the playoffs three of the past four seasons, including having the best year in franchise history. Despite having one of the most unenviable front-office positions in all of sports, Maloney wanted to stay with the Coyotes and took a leap of faith that the ownership issue would be resolved, agreeing to a long-term contract extension last week. The Coyotes added more stability on Tuesday, exercising contract extensions on associate coach Jim Playfair and goalie coach Sean Burke. Head coach Dave Tippett, who attended Tuesdays news conference, is expected to sign a deal to stay with the organization in the next few weeks and Maloney is hoping to work out deals to keep the rest of the support and scouting staffs. There are also numerous players to re-sign, including No. 1 goalie Mike Smith and forward Boyd Gordon, who both become free agents on July 1. What happens with all those deals will likely hinge on what happens with the ownership situation. Last week, the NHL agreed to sell the team to Renaissance Sports & Entertainment, a group headed by Canadian investors George Gosbee, Anthony LeBlanc and Daryl Jones. Their deal is contingent upon reaching a lease agreement for Jobing.com Arena with the city of Glendale. The potential owners joined NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly in Glendale on Tuesday, meeting first with Glendale Mayor Jerry Weier, then with City Council members to begin lease-agreement talks. "We had a number of constructive meetings today with the Mayor, various members of the City Council and the acting City Manager," Daly said in a statement. "Everyone involved in todays discussions shares the desire and ultimate objective of transitioning the ownership of the Coyotes and safeguarding the franchises long-term future in Glendale. We expect that representatives from the Renaissance group will begin meeting with the City to see if a mutually agreeable lease arrangement can be forged expeditiously. We will have no further comment pending completion of that process."Its an encouraging step, but the organization and its fans have been close before, only to be disappointed. The Coyotes have been operated by the NHL since they were purchased out of U.S. Bankruptcy Court in 2009 following former owner Jerry Moyes attempt to sell the team to Blackberry founder Jim Balsillie, who wanted to move the franchise to Hamilton, Ontario. Since then, the franchise has had numerous suitors, most recently former San Jose Sharks CEO Greg Jamison. His bid fell through in January, when he was unable to pull the necessary funds and investors together to meet a lease agreement deadline with Glendale. Numerous potential owners cropped up after that, but the NHL went with RSE, which has several partners who were part of a previous effort to buy the team under the name Ice Edge Inc. RSE and the NHL moved toward finalizing the deal with Tuesdays initial meeting with Glendale officials. "The City Council will not be making a decision regarding the Coyotes until all pertinent information has been collected and reviewed and all the available options have been thoroughly studied," the city said in a statement. "This includes several bids the city is expected to receive this Friday (May 31) from qualified venue managers interested in operating the city owned Jobing.com Arena. Glendale is committed to moving forward on a plan that is in the best interests of our city and our citizens." While RSE and the NHL work on a deal with Glendale, Maloney will continue running the team as he has the past four years without an owner. Hell do it, though, with an eye on the future, knowing an owner could be in place and finally loosen the purse strings. "Weve been going kind of sideways the last two or three years in regards of really building something lasting," Maloney said. "Weve sort of been in survival mode here for quite some time and we know with the right, stable group, the hockey side is in very good position." Maloneys first priority will be to sign Tippett. A master technician and one of the games best defensive minds, he came to the desert in the midst of the ownership chaos in 2009. Playing with a roster low on front-line talent, he moulded the Coyotes into his grinding style, leading them to the playoffs three straight seasons and the franchises first NHL division title and trip to the Western Conference finals in 2011-12. Tippett would have no trouble finding a job elsewhere, but has maintained all along that he likes the group in Phoenix and hopes to stay with the Coyotes. "Were just going to see how it plays out over the next few weeks," Tippett said. "I came here on a leap of faith and Im not going to jump off that. We just want to make sure that all the pieces are in place here so ultimately you have a chance to win." Finally landing an owner would be the biggest piece toward that. Air Jordan Cheap Wholesale . Is there a rivalry? Ahead of the Grand Slam of Darts, Sky Sports asked a panel of experts to assess the relationship between the PDCs big-hitters and the BDO underdogs. NFL Jerseys China . Does the Grand Slam have a special feel because it brings the two organisations together?Dave Clark: Its brilliant, it gives both codes the chance to flex their muscles before the respective world championships. A lot of players hit form at this time of the year with the Worlds around the corner and it just says who is the guvnor in world darts - will it be one of the BDO boys, will it be one of the PDC boys? The BDO used to be quite big but now they dont have the Gary Andersons, the Raymond van Barnevelds or the Phil Taylors. Michael van Gerwen Simon Whitlock: We get to see what the other boys are doing from the other side! Theyve got some extremely good players.Wayne Mardle: Im disappointed its not 16 v 16. The Grand Slam was incorporated to include BDO players and, over the years, its become less and less. A wolf in Wolverhampton Exclusive feature on Martin Adams Tell us about the rivalry - should we expect aggro at the Grand Slam?Michael van Gerwen: Theres no rivalry because only Glen Durrant can do damage. I cant see anyone else doing anything really good.Dave Clark: There is definitely a rivalry but I think there is room for both, the amateur game and the professional game. The BDO has produced thousands of great players over the years. If it wasnt for the BDO there would be no PDC circuit. If you’re going to have an event of PDC v BDO, you have the same number of players on each side of the fence. This is just another event and it happens to include some BDO players. Martin Wolfie Adams Wayne Mardle: If there is needle, its caused by people from back in the day thinking theres still a gripe. Believe me, the players couldnt care less. Van Gerwen isnt looking to win the Grand Slam because its got BDO players in it. Hes looking to win it because hes a greedy man!Simon Whitlock: I dont think so - I play a lot of exhibitions with these boys and were all good friends. We all just play darts, I dont think theres any rivalry. Live Grand Slam of Darts November 12, 2016, 1:00pm Live on Get Sky Sports Get a Sky Sports pass Do you play your BDO counterparts often?Michael van Gerwen: The last time I played a BDO player was last year, in the group stage, when I beat Mark Oosterhuis. I beat that guy 5-0.Simon Whitlock: Not really, sometimes Ill go to a small tournament if Ive got nothing else on, and I run into a few BDO players. Sometimes at an exhibition but its pretty rare. The greatest or the best? Exclusive insight into MVGs rock-solid mind-set Whos the likeliest BDO player to win the Grand Slam?Michael van Gerwen: I cant remember his name but hes a good player... Glen Durrant!Wayne Mardle: Its been won before by the BDO, theres no reason it cant be done again. Scott Mitchell maybe, Glen Durrant? I believe Durrant can win it, hes a fantastic player - consistent, guts, determination. The longer the format, the harder he is to beat. Watch NOW TV Watch Sky Sports for just £6.99. No contract. Martin Wolfie Adams: It will be nice if one of us did win it. I was with Scotty Waites last week and hes up for winning it again, thats for sure. He always seems to do well in Wolverhampton and is looking forward to going back to the venue and hopefully repeating his success. Martin Adams, Scott Mitchell, Glenn Durant to name a few. They’re the top ones. Any of those boys would do well on the PDC tour. Simon Whitlock Dave Clark: I really respect Martin Adams at the moment, hes been having treatment for prostate cancer and he has carried on competing. He reached a final in Italy last weekend and he is a three-time world champion and a great player. I think him against Michael van Gerwen will be the stand-out match of the tournament, certainly in the first round.Im not sure if they can win it, I dont think they quite reach the same high standards that the PDC can. Just look at the averages in the various tournaments and they arent anywhere near as high as they are in the PDC for the BDO players. There will be some upsets along the way - Jamie Hughes is a good player, the BDO world No 4, he can do some damage in a group with James Wade and Dave Chisnall and James Wilson. He is one to look out for and a dangerous player.Rod Studd: Glen Durrant is the ace in the pack. He would start as the favourite in the BDO world championship.Watch the Grand Slam of Darts live on Sky Sports between November 12-20. Also See: A wolf in Wolverhampton MVG: The greatest or the best? Though, the glass half-empty supporters will be quick to point out manager Arsene Wenger has been dumped in the round of 16 for six consecutive years, including by AC Milan the last time they won a qualifying group back in 2011-12.On the flip side, Arsenal could be pitted against Spanish La Liga leaders Real Madrid, reigning three-time Europa League champions Sevilla and Bayern Munich. We all would love his qualities to play there. And I think as well, now, he is convinced that its his best position and in every game he has that as well.He maintains that focus and will always kill you when he can. He can always deliver something special because he can dribble, has a short backlift, and he has pace. That began Arsenals current three-match unbeaten streak (2-1-0) versus the Potters in which they have not conceded a goal. The Gunners have a 315-minute shutout streak against Stoke dating to Jonathan Walters goal on the stroke of halftime that proved to be the match-winner for the Potters in a 3-2 victory Dec. 6, 2014.Stoke City (5-4-5) have put their early season struggles long behind them as they enter this match in the top half of the table. The Potters shook off an 0-3-4 start by posting wins in five of their last seven matches (5-1-1) and are seeking a third straight victory on the trot after blanking Watford and Burnley.Walters and Marc Muniesa scored 15 minutes apart in the first half to power Stoke past the Clarets 2-0 last Saturday, and the Spanish defender has filled in ably for injured talisman Ryan Shawcross in the two victories -- which coincide with his first two league starts of 2016-17.With a busy December that has the Potters also making trips to Anfield and Stamford Bridge, the pressure is on to further the momentum to stay in the top half of the table. Were back in the top half at the moment with five tough games against top teams coming up, so we will need to be strong if we are to show people that we are capable of moving higher in the table, Muniesa told Stokes official website. We are in a very good mood at the moment and everybody will be needed. One player not available for this match will be first-choice goalkeeper Jack Butland, who is still recovering from a fractured ankle suffered playing for England. Butland, expected to challenge Joe Hart for the No. 1 England shirt, was held out of Stokes U-23 match last weekend as a precaution, but an MRI taken showed no damage and he could return to the senior side by Boxing Day.He has had his MRI scans and as far as Im aware its one of those where its nowhere near as complicated or as bad as the last time it happened to him, assistant coach Mark Bowen said on BBC Radio Stokes Sport at Six show. The biggest concern when coming back from an injury of such ilk is the mental state as well as anything else, not just the physical state.Stoke also will not have the services of defender Geoff Cameron, who has been sidelined by a knee injury. Arsenal are without influential holding midfielder Santi Carzola and first-choice wide back Hector Bellerin, though he and Per Mertesacker have resumed practicing with the team.Arsenal have won all eight top-flight meetings between the teams by a combined 19-3 scoreline, posting five clean sheets while scoring at least two goals in six of those victories.
