vEditors note: The 2016-17 college basketball season will be the Year of the Freshmen,?featuring what could be the best class weve ever seen. Shane Doan Coyotes Jersey . Over the next two weeks, we will get familiar with the best of the best, examining who they are and where each of the top 10 prospects in the 2016 ESPN 100 came from.Read more: No. 10 Dukes Frank Jackson | No. 9 Kentuckys Malik Monk No. 8 Michigan States Miles Bridges | No. 7 Washingtons Markelle Fultz No. 6 Kentuckys DeAaron Fox | No. 5 Kentuckys Bam Adebayo No. 4 UCLAs Lonzo Ball | No. 3 Dukes Jayson Tatum No. 2 Kansas Josh Jackson | No. 1 Dukes Harry GilesThe Washington Marriott Wardman Park is a sprawling maze: 195,000 square feet of meeting rooms, breakout rooms, and ballrooms of various sizes designed to, as its web site explains, provide an ideal setting for whatever youre planning, regardless of size or scope.Salon 3, the ballroom into which Miles Bridges has just walked, is laughably surplus to current requirements. In a few hours, in an identical room next door, the setting will be far more ideal. Coaches and players will camp at team-specific conference tables; cameras and microphones will rove between them in packs. It will be hectic, but the scope will make sense -- especially for Bridges. The No. 8-ranked player in the class of 2016 might be Michigan State coach Tom Izzos most talented recruit ever. At minimum, the 6-foot-7 wing is the gem of the Hall of Famers most lauded freshmen class, a group State fans have called, simply enough, The Class. Bridges is the likeliest among them to be in the NBA less than a year from now. His athleticism and 1-through-4 versatility represent the most obvious key to the Spartans 2016-17 season. Given MSUs personnel losses last spring, its practically the start of a new era.Even Bridges presence at the event elicits a noise unto itself: In 21 seasons, hes the first freshman Izzo has ever taken to media day. Then, of course, theres the small matter of Bridges hometown: Flint, Michigan, the same place that birthed Michigan State legends Mateen Cleaves, Morris Peterson and Charlie Bell, better known as the Flintstones. And then theres this:I think Miles Bridges is the next Flintstone, Izzo said. Hes a blue-collar superstar. Which fits me, and our program, perfectly.BACK IN SALON 3, the only noise is the 18-year-olds voice, explaining how he dabbled with the idea of walking away from his own ideal setting -- between coach and recruit, player and team, program and hometown. Its true. For a minute there (or a few months, or maybe a whole year), Bridges was interested in breaking the Flint-Sparty mold.Everybody, literally everybody, from Flint goes to Michigan State, Bridges said. I wanted to switch it up at first. I wanted to be different. There is something to be said for forging ones own path. Or, at the very least, not wearing the same button-down shirt every other dude at the party is wearing. The impulse of Michigan State mens basketball could apply to the entire region: 40 minutes north of Flint on I-75 is Saginaw, Michigan, the other half of what Izzo calls the Flint-Saginaw group, which produced former Spartans stars Jason Richardson and Draymond Green, among others. But Flint, specifically, shares an elevated place in Michigan State basketball lore, and in Izzos heart.Every night when I go to bed and every day when I drive in to work, I realize the cars I drive, the house I live in, the summer Im going to have is probably because of the Flintstones, Izzo said in February. Its a hard act to follow. Its also a hard place to grow up.Few American cities were so thoroughly hollowed out by the prevailing economic and demographic forces -- deindustrialization, globalization, white flight, urban decay -- of the late 20th century. In 1908, General Motors was founded in Flint. In 1978, it employed nearly 80,000 people in the area. In 2010, it employed 8,000. Between 2010 and 2014, when U.S. median household income was $53,482, Flints was $24,679.In 2015, according to U.S. Census data, Flints poverty rate was 40.1 percent. Few cities are more violent per capita. In just the past year, a federal public health state of emergency was declared when lead poisoning -- from a contaminated local water supply -- was discovered among thousands of residents.Or, as Bridges put it: Everybody knows its tough out there.Bridges parents divorced when he was a kid; he felt like the man of the house by 11. He saw fights at schools, drugs sold in plain view, and, among peers, an understood goal: get out.In my generation, not a lot of people do, he said. They become victims to society.By his freshman year of high school, it was clear basketball would be Bridges chance. Before the start of 10th grade, he transferred to powerhouse Huntington Prep in Huntington, West ?Virginia, and, more or less, started over.Izzo and his staff had known Bridges since he was in eighth grade. They had built a strong relationship, gotten used to seeing him around. After the move to West Virginia, though, Bridges kind of disappeared for a while, Izzo said. The Spartans were still chasing him, of course, but his path was no longer so preordained. He looked at Kentucky, Iowa State, Indiana, UConn. He had left home, forced himself to come out of his own shell, matured as a young man and in my game, even interned under a circuit court judge. If he was tempted to make a clean break, to leave Flint behind for good, who could blame him? Then came his official visit to East Lansing.A few months later, on the first day allowed by NCAA rules, Bridges mailed Izzo his letter of intent.I just felt it, Bridges said. I felt like I belonged there.TOM IZZO CAN?be self-critical to a fault.Example No. 1: He is haunted by last seasons first-round loss to Middle Tennessee State. This is understandable. The No. 2-seeded Spartans were a heavy Final Four favorite, led by senior guard Denzel Valentine, before they gave up 90 points on 68 possessions to Conference USAs seventh-best offense. That one stings. Fair enough.Less fair, perhaps: Izzo blames himself for not calling a timeout until Middle Tennessee had opened its early 15-2 lead. (Nobody else, I made the mistake, Izzo said last month. This year, if we get down 12-0, there will be a timeout called. And I mean that sincerely.) In reality, theres no one to blame for Middle Tennessees 40-minute, out-of-body experience. Basketball can be weird.Example No. 2: It took Izzo until this summer?-- after 19 straight tournament appearances, seven Final Fours and induction into the Hall of Fame -- to admit his program had built a culture.Early on, after we won the national championship, everybody was ready to canonize us, Izzo said. I thought, come back in 10, 12 years. Weve had some really good teams, but we had a couple of years where in my mind we were good but the culture wasnt the same. Its different now. Last season, Valentine and Matt Costello led one of the tightest-knit, hardest-working teams of their coachs career. Those good vibes have become self-sustaining. Seniors and juniors carry them forward. The Spartans are already equating this teams chemistry to last seasons, remarkable given the turnover in personnel. Meanwhile, it has become a bona fide recruiting advantage: Prospects want playing time and a chance to go pro, sure, but some are just as interested in being part of a family. When Bridges took his official visit, he stayed with senior guard Tum Tum Nairn, the teams universally beloved Bahamian, a born leader, one of Izzos favorite people in the world. What could have been a casual arms-length weekend was, instead, a two-day crash course in bonding.I believe its one of my gifts to understand people just from a conversation, Nairn said. I care about people. Thats just who I am. I show them love. So when guys come to visit, I can get a good feel for them, even in two days. You cant hide who you really are. And Miles was just himself -- just a regular kid who has great power and weight behind his name, but is so humble in spirit. It was easy to see.Bridges and Nairn immediately hit it off. As did Bridges, Joshua Langford and the rest of the freshman class.?Veteran?Eron Harris?described the star-studded newcomers as his brothers for life. Brotherhood and family are frequent terms; open expressions of love are the norm.In Bridges, Izzo saw a player whose ethos aligned perfectly with his own. The kid required none of the frills during his recruitment, didnt need heavy flattery or constant attention. Izzo has been even more impressed since Bridges arrived. Prospects of his caliber sometimes come in and think they know everything, Izzo said. Bridges, instead, is a sponge, a player with massive gifts and minimal ego -- a regular superstar. For reasons that go far beyond basketball, its a perfect fit.I guess I am willing to say it now, Izzo said. You know what? Weve built a culture.IF CULTURE YIELDS an advantage on the floor -- and what coach would argue otherwise -- the Spartans will need to draw on it immediately.Michigan States November schedule is almost masochistic. The Spartans open in Hawaii at the Armed Forces Classic against a top-15 Arizona team. Four days later, they fly to New York, where theyll meet No. 2 Kentucky in the Champions Classic. On Nov. 23, they begin the Battle 4 Atlantis, a field that includes Louisville, Baylor, Wichita State and VCU. And four days after that, theyre in Durham, North Carolina, for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge against loaded preseason title favorite Duke.If that wasnt brutal enough (and it was), MSU will likely take it on without Gavin Schilling and transfer big Ben Carter, both of whom suffered injuries this fall. Of last years significant contributors, only Harris returns, and with a much heavier load on his shoulders. To say Bridges, Langford, Cassius Winston and Nick Ward will be thrown in the deep end is like saying the Iron Islands crown kings with a gentle dip in the surf.To rise harder and stronger, Bridges will have to unleash his talents from the jump. The Spartans staff has a history of maximizing versatile wings with skills and size, and few have arrived in East Lansing with this combination thereof. The 6-foot-7 lefty has the chops to comfortably play the 2, 3 and 4 in States half-court sets. His coach will constantly probe the floor for mismatches he can exploit, and there will be plenty. On defense, Bridges has the size and speed to switch screens and credibly guard all five spots. Izzos teams are renowned for their rebounding, but less so for what those defensive rebounds often produce: attacking secondary breaks. (Everybody tries to make it into this plowhorse thing, that if youre a good rebounding team, youre this big, physical brute, Izzo said. Weve never been BIG big. We rebound ... and then we run.) Which should, in theory, allow Bridges to do stuff like this:Its an exciting prospect, to say the least. Bridges exhibition debut in late October -- 33 points (12-of-14), eight rebounds, four blocks and three assists -- did little to dampen the noise.Still, from the schedule to key injuries to plain old inexperience, plenty of trials lay ahead. And the bar -- next Flintstone -- is already high.AS A SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL, even all the way out in Huntington, Bridges organized a collection for water access in his hometown. He feels a responsibility to help the people of Flint in any way he can after the water disaster. People will thank him on Twitter for lending a prominent voice to their anger.I can use that platform, Bridges said. I want to change my city.Said Izzo: The toughness and resiliency of that city, the way people keep getting knocked down and keep bouncing back up, it becomes a part of you.It has become an inextricable part of Izzos program. Bridges could have avoided all of it. He could have shrugged off the power and weight behind his name. He could have been just another talented future NBA draft pick at another elite basketball program. He could have let basketball take him far away from Flint -- out. He could have looked at the pressures inherent in legacy and opted for a different, quieter path.Instead, his ideal setting was right there all along.Because at the end of the day, I couldnt run from it, Bridges said. I knew where I belonged. Connor Murphy Coyotes Jersey . 24 Baylor in a Big 12 clash between teams trending in opposite directions. Andrew Wiggins made 10-of-12 from the foul line and scored 17 for Kansas (14-4, 5-0 Big 12), which capped a stretch of four straight games against ranked opponents unscathed. Custom Arizona Coyotes Jerseys . The 25-year-old Japanese star has officially been posted by his club team, the Rakuten Golden Eagles. http://www.hockeycoyotesauthority.com/justin-peters-coyotes-jersey-c-26/ .J. -- New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his left knee. SEATTLE -- Clint Hurdle speaks with great appreciation for what Sean Rodriguez brings defensively, playing wherever Pittsburgh needs him to be in the field. It was his bat, though, that carried the Pirates on Wednesday night.Hes as good a defender as Ive run across wherever you put him. ... Hes a gifted defender and hes having one of his better offensive seasons so far this half, Hurdle said.Rodriguez doubled in consecutive at-bats and drove in four runs, David Freese hit a solo home run and Pittsburgh beat the Seattle Mariners 8-1 to split a two-game interleague series.Rodriguez was responsible for breaking the game open in the fifth inning with a three-run double into the left-field corner off Seattle reliever Donn Roach. Rodriguez doubled an inning earlier off starter Wade Miley (6-4) to score Starling Marte.Freese got it all started with a solo home run on the first pitch of the second inning. It was a three-run inning for Pittsburgh, capped by a two-run double from Josh Harrison. All that offense backed a strong start from rookie right-hander Jameson Taillon, who pitched six innings, giving up just one run and six hits. Making his fifth career start, Taillon (2-1) overcame a shaky first inning and retired 10 straight at one point. He struck out six and didnt allow a walk.Taillon made some adjustments from his last start against the Dodgers when he was knocked out after four innings and giving up eight hits and four runs. His curveball was sharp, and Taillon relied more on his sinking fastball that had a number of Seattle hitters swinging over the top.Hurdle thought Taillons final four pitches to get Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager to finish off the sixth inning with two runners on might have been his best.Even though the game is 8-1, I dont want to give up those runs, Taillon said. I wanted to really put the foot on the gas there and set the tone still. I knew I was close to being done so I let them eat and was aggressive with them.Miley was making his first start since June 12 after a brief stint on the disabled list due to an impingement in his left shoulder. He was lucky to make it through the fourth, leaving pitches upp in the strike zone and watching them get hit hard. Brad Richardson Coyotes Jersey Authentic. A lot of mistakes up over the plate and he had a hard time getting in rhythm with any of his pitches, Seattle manager Scott Servais said.Freeses opposite-field home run into the first row down the right-field line was just the start. Rodriguezs double in the fourth gave Pittsburgh a 4-0 lead, and he scored on Jordy Mercers sharp single. Roach took over in the fifth and was greeted by consecutive one-out singles by Freese and Jung Ho Kang. Marte walked and Rodriguezs hard shot just inside third base bounced into the corner and allowed all three runners to score.Rodriguez doubled his RBI output for the entire month of June entering the game. Between June 1 and June 23, Rodriguez appeared in 21 games without an RBI.BROKEN HANDIf the pitching performances from Miley and Roach werent bad news enough, the Mariners lost catcher Steve Clevenger in the third inning to a broken bone in his right hand after taking a foul ball square on the exposed hand off the bat of Andrew McCutchen. Clevenger fractured the third metacarpal, and Seattle will require a roster move to fill the backup catcher role.TRAINERS ROOMPirates: RHP Ryan Vogelsong will throw a simulated game this weekend in Oakland after throwing a bullpen session on Tuesday. Vogelsong suffered facial fractures when he was hit in the left eye with a pitch in late May. Hes eligible to come off the disabled list on July 23.Mariners: Seattle placed reliever Nick Vincent on the 15-day disabled list with a back strain to clear a spot for Miley. Vincent said hes been dealing with the discomfort for about two weeks and finally decided rest was the best course. Vincent has made a team-high 35 appearances.UP NEXTPirates: After an off day on Thursday, the Pirates open a series on Friday against Oakland with Jeff Locke (7-5) getting the start.Mariners: Seattle opens a four-game series with Baltimore on Thursday and Taijuan Walker (3-6) on the mound after missing his last start due to a sore ankle. Jeremy Rae of Fort Erie, Ont., was sixth heading into the final lap of the 1,500 but came back to finish second in three minutes 39.45 seconds, six hundredths of a second behind Valentin Smirnov of Russia. Rae became the first Canadian to medal in the event at the University Games since Olympian Dave Bailey captured silver in 1967 in Tokyo. "Im really confident in my ability to explode. Ive had great finishes all season, Rae said. "With 200 metres to go, I tripped when another runner cut in front of me, but it didnt stop me. I think I would have had a good shot at gold, but Im happy I got silver." Ross Proudfoot of Sudbury, Ont., was ninth in 3:44.33. Earlier, the trio of Vancouvers Inaki Gomez, Ben Thorne of Kitimat, B.C., and Evan Dunfee of Richmond, B.C., claimed Canadas first medal of the games, finishing third in the mens 20-kilometre team racewalk in four hours 20 minutes 35 seconds. Russia (4:04:31) took gold and Ukraine (4:08:09) won silver. "Its an honour to win Canadas first medal in Kazan," said Gomez, who competed for the University of British Columbia until 2010 and now attends law school at the University of Calgary. "The team event is neat because it adds a whole other dynamic to the competition." Other Canadians in athletics finals on Tuesday included Sarah Wells of Unionville, Ont., fourth in the womens 400m hurdles; Alicia Brown of Ottawa, fifth in the womens 400m; Jessica Smith of North Vancouver, B.C., sixth in the womens 800m; Helen Crofts of West Vancouver, B.C., seventh in the womens 800m; Daniel Harper of Brampton, Ont., eighth in the mens 400m; and Patrick Arbour of Ottawa, who completed the decathlon in eighth place. In womens basketball, Canada (1-1) held a 48-43 lead heading into the fourth quarter but couldnt hold on and dropped a 59-57 decision to Ukraine (1-1). The Canadians face a must-win situation Wednesday when they wrap up pool play against Taiwan (2-0), the 2011 Universiade silver medallist. GLENDALE, Ariz. Adam Clendening Rangers Jersey . -- The "Honey Badger" is about to get his first NFL start. Arizona coach Bruce Arians said Tuesday that rookie Tyrann Mathieu will start at free safety in place of injured Rashad Johnson when the Cardinals play the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday. Mathieu has been a sensation in training camp as he looks to make a comeback after being booted from the LSU team for marijuana use and sitting out football altogether last season. In his NFL debut in Arizonas 17-0 victory at Green Bay last week, Mathieu had a 12-yard sack, a tackle for loss, a pass defended, two special teams tackles and a 24-yard punt return. Johnson has a mild ankle and knee sprain, injuries that occurred when he broke up a pass late in practice on Monday. "Well be cautious with him," Arians said. "Hes having such a great camp." Mathieu said is among those who has "shown me the ropes" about playing safety and he wishes him a speedy recovery. When Johnson returns, Mathieu still figures prominently in Arizonas defence in the nickel and dime packages. Hes just making too many plays, knocking balls loose and picking off passes, in practice to not have him on the field. Arians has noted that the entire Cardinals squad has taken Mathieu under its wing. The coach called the 5-foot-9 player "a lovable kid" who has been "making plays all over the field." Mathieu, a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2011, was kicked off LSUs team before the start of last season for failed drug tests. His image and presumably his NFL future took another hit a few weeks later when he and three former teammates were arrested on marijuana charges after police officers found 10 bags of pot and drug paraphernalia in his Baton Rouge apartment. When he appeared at his introductory news conference with the Cardinals, Mathieu said he wanted to abandon his nickname of "Honey Badger" because of all the problems associated with his time at LSU. But hes found that fans still love it, shouting it out to him at practice. Now Mathieu is starting in the second preseason game after missing an entire season of football. "I couldnt fathom it," he said. "It probably was a longshot, but Im just putting in hard work, man, and I guess everythings starting to come together for me." Mathieu said his teammates are telling him to just do his job. "For the most part everybodys just telling me to play my role (and) everythings going to come to me," he said. "Dont get caught up in the media and all the hype thats going on right now, just go out there and keep doing what youre doing." When Arizona drafted Mathieu in the third round, it was considered a big risk for the team. From the start, he said, the Cardinals fans showed their support. Asked what theyve said to him, Mathieu said, "Good luck, I hope you stay clean, I hope you stay healthy, I hope you come here and make plays like you did at LSU." That support has only grown through the first few weeks of training camp, not only locally but around the country. "I think a lot of people kind of jumped back on the bandwagon, so to say," he said, "on twitter, everywhere, everybodys starting to root for me again, which is definitely encouraging." NEW YORK -- Novak Djokovics U. Drew Smyly Jersey .S. Open final against Stan Wawrinka on Sunday will be the Serbs third Grand Slam title match of 2016 and his seventh in the past eight majors. It is Djokovics 21st Grand Slam final in all, second in the history of mens tennis only to Roger Federers 28. And it gives Djokovic the chance to gain more ground in the championship count, too, of course: He can raise his trophy total to 13, which would place him alone in fourth place behind Federer (17), Rafael Nadal (14) and Pete Sampras (14).After a draining, and decidedly unusual, four-set victory over Gael Monfils in the semifinals Friday, when he got both shoulders massaged by a trainer, Djokovic looked forward to a bit of rest. Thats kind of rich, considering he has spent almost exactly half as much time on court as Wawrinka so far: a tad under 9 hours vs. slightly less than 18 hours.I have an extra day now to recover and get ready for the finals, which is, you know, where definitely I desire to be whenever I come to the Grand Slams, said Djokovic, the No. 1 seed and defending champion. I want to be able to put myself in position to fight for the trophy, and everything that has happened in the tournament so far is behind me now. My thoughts are only on Sundays match. As well they should be. For while No. 3 seed Wawrinka will be participating in only his third Grand Slam final, he won each of the other two. Plus, he has won each of his past 10 finals at all tournaments. And while he is only 4-19 against Djokovic over their careers, half of Wawrinkas victories came en route to his major titles, in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Australian Open and the final of the 2015 French Open.Stan is a big-match player, Djokovic acknowledged. He loves the big stage.Hes also something of a late bloomer.Wawrinka did not reach a Grand Slam semifinal until his 35th appearance in a major, at age 28.Now, a little more than five months past his 31st birthday, he can become the oldest U.S. Open champion since Ken Rosewall was 35 in 1970. Hed also be only the fifth man in the Open era with at least two major titles after 30 (his Swiss countryman and pal, Federer, only has one since turning that age).I know I have some ups and downs during the year. Im not playing my best tennis in every tournament. But Im trying to work as hard as I can to give me the chance to play well every time I step on the court, Wawrinka said after beating Kei Nishikori in a four-set semifinal. And in Grand Slams is where I want to play my best tennis, is where I want to be the better player, always find a way to find my game and to put everything together.Wawrinka, though, nearly departed Flushing Meadows last weekend. Thats when, in the third round against 64th-ranked Dan Evans, Wawrinka faced a match point in a fourth-set tiebreaker, saved it, and wound up winning in the fifth, repeatedly using whats become his trademark gesture: pointing an index finger to his temple.Whats that all about?Sometimes, I dont always find myself comfortable on the court and I have to fight with myself. So thats what Im focusing (on) here: to fight, to suffer, to accept to suffer, to accept that the player in front of me (is) playing better, he explained. And thats when Im happy with myself and proud of myself -- when I stay strong with what I want to do.Nothing he does on a court with his racket is as important as his smooth, one-handed backhand. When on-target, it might be the prettiest, and most effective, shot in all of tennis.Djokovic can lay claim to some superlatives, too. His return of serve ranks up there with the best ever. As do his body-twisting court coverage and ability to go from defense to offense just like that. This matchup will be Djokovics seventh U.S. Open final, and Wawrinkas first. In general, I know when I arrive in the final, Im ready to play my best tennis, and thats what Im looking for. Thats what Im trying to do, Wawrinka said. Estrada pitched five strong innings, Norichika Aori drove in two runs, Khris Davis hit a home run and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Francisco Giants 6-1 on Wednesday night. Estrada gave the Brewers more than they could expect in his first start in two months. The right-hander allowed a hit, did not walk anybody and struck out six. "At first I felt a little weird out there," Estrada said. "As I got going I felt more comfortable. Overall, I thought it went pretty well." Estrada was activated from the disabled list before the game to make the start in place of left-hander Tom Gorzelanny, who is still bothered by a sore elbow. Estrada had only a pair of rehab starts and his pitch count was limited. He retired his last 14 batters and 15 of 16 overall. "His command was outstanding," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "He kept his curve down in the zone and his fastball had life to it. For him, coming back after two starts and throwing only 2 2-3 innings, I thought it was really good." Alfredo Figaro (2-3) pitched two innings to earn the win. Burke Badenhop and Michael Gonzalez each added a scoreless inning. Jeff Bianchi and Martin Maldonado also drove in runs for the Brewers, who won their third in four games. The Brewers did lose infielder and leadoff hitter Rickie Weeks to a strained left hamstring. He appeared to injure himself trying to beat out an infield grounder in the eighth. "I took two or three steps out of the box and I felt a little pop," Weeks said. Weeks added that he has never had hamstring problems before. Buster Posey drove in a run for the Giants, who have lost four of five. "I was working a lot during my bullpens and I was excited to be back out there," Estrada said. "I tried to stay relaxed and not show any emotion." Davis made a shoestring catch on PPoseys fly, saving at least one run and possibly avoiding a rally. Matt Moore Rays Jersey. Madison Bumgarner (11-7) took a shutout into the eighth inning, but lost. He gave up four runs — three earned — on five hits in seven-plus innings. He walked three and struck out four. "For whatever reason, we dont look like the same team we were last year," Bumgarner said. "There are things I could have done differently. There are things everyone could have done differently. Its been the same story all year." The game was scoreless into the bottom of the seventh. Brandon Crawford walked and Brandon Belt singled to open the inning. After a passed ball, Posey hit a sacrifice fly. The first four Brewers reached base against Bumgarner in eighth. They all scored. Davis singled and Yuniesky Betancourt doubled to start the rally. Bianchi beat out an infield single to drive in one run and another came home when Bumgarner threw wildly past third on a bunt. "We didnt do a whole lot against him," Roenicke said. "When you go up against a guy that good and win, its a great game." Santiago Casilla took over on the mound and got one out before Aokis sharp single up the middle scored two. Its the first time in 10 starts that Bumgarner allowed more than three runs while pitching at least seven innings. Davis homered and Maldonado singled home a run against Barry Zito in the ninth. NOTES: Gorzelanny (elbow contusion) threw a bullpen session and will likely make his next start on Saturday in Seattle. ... The Brewers sent IF Scooter Gennett to Triple-A Nashville to make room for Estrada. ... Giants OF Jeff Francoeur started in centre field for the third time in his career. He made 176 starts there in the minors. ... Giants OF Gregor Blanco, .067 (3 for 45) since the All-Star break, will be given a day or two to clear his mind. Perkins?was certainly not given the easiest road to connect with fans as a pure good guy in the WWE Cruiserweight Classic. After dispatching Da Mack in a brief but enjoyable match, Perkins had to square off with three of the most popular guys in the tournament field on his way to the finals. Each of those three curried great favor with the crowd at Full Sail University, and going up against that trio of wrestlers in particular presented unique challenges for Perkins. It wasnt perfect, as the crowd struggled at times to fully support both competitors in each round, but through the quality of his matches and the different stories Perkins managed to tell in the ring, he won the fans over by the time he squared off with Gran Metalik in the finals. That persistence is exactly the kind of thing you get from the man known as TJP -- nose to the grindstone and pushing toward his goals, no matter the obstacle. With that mentality, it has been easier for Perkins than it is for most to not get overwhelmed by a big moment such as?winning the inaugural CWC,?and that should serve him well as he appears on Monday Night Raw on a weekly basis.I try to stay in the moment, Perkins said in an interview shortly after his CWC win. At the Cruiserweight Classic finale, I said ... I dont know if people had looked it up, or if they had heard it before, but it was an old Zen proverb. Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, you chop wood, carry water. It can be interpreted a lot of ways, but for the most part its about staying in the moment. The Zen mindset that helped Perkins survive homelessness and motivate himself despite great obstacles would have served his fans well the past couple weeks. Despite his victory in the CWC and owning the new WWE cruiserweight championship, Perkins didnt appear on Raw as the cruiserweight division debuted last week. He appeared on the pre-show, along with a backstage, web-only video with new No. 1 contender Brian Kendrick, but we had to wait an additional six days to see his main roster debut at the Clash of Champions pay-per-view.That wait paid off, as Perkins showed off a brand new 8-bit video game-inspired entrance theme and video presentation prior to his match Sunday. That helped drive home how big of a deal his debut really was.Perkins was still very much in the moment, and his one-day-at-a-time demeanor helped him showcase, along with Kendrick, why the cruiserweights are able to have matches that dont feel out of place on a pay-per-view -- by taking each opportunity as it comes and doing the most with it.Things will come and go, and your life will go on, but you dont want to get too ahead of yourself, Perkins said. I used that as a way to view each round of the Cruiserweight Classic so I didnt get ahead of myself and stayed in the moment. I see it the same way, in terms of the opportunity to go to Monday Night Raw. Ill take each moment as it comes, and Ill wait for the bridge before I have to cross it.Thats not to say Perkins is taking this chance for granted, though. Its really exciting to be able to represent the cruiserweights and go to Monday Night Raw. I grew up watching Monday Night Raw, and its really a big dream of mine to perform on that stage, Perkins said. The talent there is so incredible. Im in good company, and Im excited for it.WWE is happy to point to Perkins experience, with 18 years in the ring and countless big matches. But when determining value within the company and with the fans, it comes down to the same baseline (with certain and expanding exceptions in the modern era): If it didnt happen here, it didnt happen, as Jerry The King Lawler so eloquently put it during Sunday nights broadcast.Thats part of why the CWC was such a big deal for Perkins and the other 31 competitors.I think this is the biggest spectacle weve ever had, in regards to representing cruiserweights, Perkins said. I was so thrilled with how everything came about and to be part of it.Despite it being the first tournament of its kind in WWE history, bringing in 32 talents who werent (to that point) under contract to square off on WWE airwaves, the tournament format is nothing new to wrestling or the WWE. There have been dozens of tournaments to determine champions and contenders over the years, to say nothing of the spectacle that was King of the Ring.In the modern era, tournaments of note have largely migrated to independent wrestling organizations, which is part of the reason the CWC was significant. Hardcore wrestling fans will know about events such as Pro Wrestling Guerillas Battle of Los Angeles, and New Japan Pro Wrestling has large chunks of its calendar set aside for a number of tournaments of note. Its insane because so much of what I do has been based off of my heroes and guys that I watched come up, and most of them started as cruiserweights, Perkins said. When they were doing similar things to this, thats what kind of inspired me to do [what I do].I grew up watching Super J-Cup tournaments and things like that, and those were pretty cool, he continued, referencing one of NJPWs most prominent, if infrequent, events. They had a mystique about them, but they were few and far between. That added to their mystique. The CWC had a lot of history come before it, but the unique circumstances in which it was set up and the rarity of tournaments in WWE prior to the launch added a level of curiosity and value to the competition and to the wrestlers who will make up Raws new cruiserweight division.En route to his victory, Perkins experienced positivity that balanced the occasional struggle to connect with the fans as a good guy. In his second-round match with Johnny Gargano and in his third-round match with Rich Swann, Perkins was across the rring from guys who were not only his friends but also guys he had faced numerous times before. Dylan Larkin Red Wings Jersey Authentic. Youre in there with guys youre friends with, and theres a certain camaraderie about being able to be in the ring in front of so many people, Perkins said. Sometimes, youre literally saying to the other guy, Do you remember in that beer hall not that long ago? This is pretty ridiculous, to be on a different stage. There is a certain drawback to that familiarity, however, and thats the possibility of complacency and repeating what they have done in the past. Perkins, Gargano and Swann, in particular, seemed up for the task.Youd think itd be kind of tough because you know each other so well, and some of the old tricks dont apply when thats the case, Perkins said. I think it makes the chess game of performing more interesting because now you have different things at your disposal [with this kind of setting] that you wouldnt otherwise be using, and so, as a performer, you look forward to those types of things.Wrestling fans might not always consider how much work goes into a match such as that, whether the opponent is familiar or a new challenge. For Perkins, there isnt much time to linger on a match, no matter how much positive reaction might come of it. To continue to perform at that level requires work that goes far beyond staying in peak physical condition and perfecting a move set.Yeah, Im a nerd, man, Perkins said. Im such a workaholic and really an intense student of all this, so even now, at this stage, I relentlessly try to watch footage and replay things. I still bring my notebook everywhere, and I fill it with what probably looks like nonsense if you were to read it back. Im constantly watching and reviewing stuff.Being a student of the game makes you acutely aware of a big moment when you see it. When you find yourself inside that kind of big moment, as Perkins did just before the start of the CWC final, it brings to the surface a number of thoughts and feelings. That was beyond words how crazy that was, Perkins said of?Triple Hs reveal of the new cruiserweight championship. You could kind of tell, I dont know how the sound translated on the broadcast, but the building was literally shaking, and people were going nuts. Ive never seen people go so nuts for a little bit of hardware, but its a pretty prestigious thing. The final match between Perkins and Metalik had a buzz and energy to it from the very beginning, thanks in part to that introduction, but also because of the 30 matches that culminated in that moment and the meaning they had to competitors and fans alike. From the moment the bell rang at the end, all I could think about was everything I went through to get there, Perkins said. About collecting coins in the parking lot when I was homeless, being evicted, you know, all these different things, and I think it was at that moment with Triple H and Mr. Regal that it [felt real].Perkins found himself, in a rare moment, getting caught up in everything that came to his mind. Then I started thinking about all my heroes, and I just had flashbacks to when they finally got their moment, he said. Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 12, Eddie Guerrero over Brock Lesnar when he won the title. I think about what I saw in them -- I was enamored with their emotion and how they must have felt. I sort of was beside myself a little bit while I was reviewing those in my head and thinking, Wow, somebodys watching me like that right now. A lot of people were.Rather than becoming overwhelmed by what he had achieved or settling for this as a career highlight, Perkins thought equally about his past and his memories. He knew what kind of effect watching events such as the CWC had on him while he was growing up, and its equally interesting to considering what effect this tournament could have on the next generation.Theres probably some kid out there thats going to come to the Performance Center someday, Perkins said. Or enroll in some wrestling training and get started on the regional level, and theyre going to look at this [tournament] and say, Thats why I wanted to do it. Its really incredibly humbling to be honest.Despite the flashiness of his new entrance or the swagger often on display in the ring, its hard to not notice how appreciative Perkins is of this opportunity -- both when watching him on screen and when talking to him away from the bright lights. That is made clear in the way he carries himself.Someone had said to me before I was going out for the finals, they said, You dont look nervous at all. And I dont get nervous over things, Perkins said. The thing is, being homeless makes you nervous. Struggling like that, that hardship, that makes you nervous because you dont know if youre going to get over that. This? This is not hard. This is fun. Im in heaven now.Perkins hasnt had to worry about homelessness in a while, thanks to his work before he joined the WWE full time, and especially since that point. His ability to put the pressures and stresses of performing every week for millions of people into perspective by considering his past and the alternative of where things were and where they could have gone has served him well. It has also helped him to stay the same person who became such an appealing target for WWE to sign, the same person who has been pegged to anchor the new WWE cruiserweight division. At the end of the day, I come home and watch Netflix like everybody else, he said. Ill be a little bit more busy, but in a good way. Its a dream job, but its not going to be much of a change [to how I work]. Im just happy to be along for the ride. Ron Dennis has experienced extremely difficult times during more than 30 years as boss of the McLaren F1 team but none will be more personally taxing than the months ahead. Ndamukong Suh Nebraska Jersey .For a man whose passion is Formula 1 (and always will be, to quote a recent interview), the public hurt inflicted by the boardroom coup will be nothing compared to removal from the helm of a team he nurtured and shaped into one of the greatest in the history of the sport.Pain is a favourite word of Ron when expressing the trials and tribulations of competing. He is going to feel a lot of that -- but without the compensation provided by the totally irreplaceable buzz of going racing and being involved at the highest level. Ron Dennis will miss that. Whether or not racing will miss him is typical of the many contradictions created by this managerial powerhouse. The simple figures behind the Dennis hegemony tell of expanding McLaren from 50 to 3,250 employees and winning more than 20 F1 world championships along the way. The details are more complex -- as befits the man himself -- but intriguing because of it.The story of Ron Dennis and McLaren is a lengthy one in terms of time and achievement; so colourful and varied, in fact, that it leaves those of us who knew him with a series of landmark moments that created an indelible impression -- for reasons good and bad.In March 1981, we were called to a former electronics factory on Boundary Road in Woking to visit not only McLarens new workshop but also to see F1s first carbon fibre chassis. All of this was an outward sign of the new regime driven by Dennis as his company, Project Four, merged with a McLaren team that had been dying on its feet. The event was low-key but the aims were clearly very high, as evidenced by John Barnards revolutionary and lightweight chassis being prepared in these small but unfashionably immaculate premises.Dennis had convinced the talented and occasionally irascible Barnard that they could work together. Ron would use the same powers of persuasion to encourage Niki Lauda to not only make a comeback, but to do it with McLaren. Lauda won the third race of his return in 1982, while John Watson would take victory for the team in Detroit two months later.Thinking, as always, of the future, Dennis confided during a press dinner that weekend that he had approached Ayrton Senna with a view to funding the young Brazilians F3 programme for 1983 in return for an option for F1. Dennis may have been non-plussed when Senna, clearly a rising star, turned him down but that merely doubled Rons determination to eventually have Ayrton on board.By the time that mission had been accomplished for 1988, Dennis had already gone through the quite remarkable phase of convincing Porsche to build what would be the dominant TAG-Turbo. With the Senna/Prost/McLaren/Honda package then winning all but one race in 1988, it really did seem that nothing could stop Dennis. It was no surprise when he was named Businessman of the Year by an esteemed commercial publication that had nothing to do with sport. How long could this go on? The handful of F1 reporters ushered into McLarens charcoal-coloured premises in Wokings Albert Drive in 2002 couldnt help but feel that Dennis had finally over-reached himself when he discussed the latest plans for his company. With the boyish enthusiasm of a youngster showing off his new train set, Dennis revealed a scale model of what would eventually be known as the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC).Perhaps reading our collective doubts, Ron assured the assembled company that the bill (eventually £270 million) would be financed over three years by surplus cash flow. And it was. Inbetween, we would don hard hats, boots and high-vis jackets to inspect work in progress, that same excitement still palpable as Ron marched ahead, explaining detail and, at the same time, noting snags. While no longer doubting this project would reach fruition, we couldnt help but feel sympathy for the hapless site foreman as Dennis made requests for cleanliness and perfection that redefined fastidious to the point of damaging obsession. That, of course, would always be the problem. You cannot achieve such phenomenal success without causing upset along the way. While Dennis may have accepted that unfortunate necessity, his arrogance occasionally seemed to blank off its true effect. The chickens, which were bound to come home to roost, crash-landed in the middle of 2007.In January of that year, Ron had held a press lunch in one of the boardrooms at MTC. The purpose was to tell the F1 media how we would deal with the arrival of Lewis Hamilton. This, in not so many words, was the subtext: These are the ground rules. Youll talk to Lewis only when we say so.So intent was Dennis on micro-managing his exciting new charge and instructing so-called Fleet Street to get its house in order, he did not know about damaging events taking place under his own roof. Six months later, the devastating effect of Spygate would explode across the Silverstone paddock, taking with it Rons proudly and earnestly espoused policy of clarity and honesty in all things. At a time when friends are to be valued, Ron found he had an enemy exactly where he didnt need one. The relationship between Dennis, a successful but opinionated working class man, and Max Mosley, an intellectual patrician, was bound to cause friction at some point. These two had previously rubbed along as professionally as possible but McLarens transgression and, in the eyes of FIA President Mosley, Rons denial of key failings would lead to the team paying a price. One hundred million dollars, to be precise. But as Rons detractors knew only too well, it was the bosss personal pride that would be damaged more than the companys bank account. His close family and friends were quick to rally round; something deeply appreciated by a man with a profound belief in the value of loyalty. In yet another contradiction, workers on the shop floor would tell you they rarely saw their boss, never mind exchange a word or two. And yet McLaren to this day is staffed by employees who would not dream of going anywhere else. And those of long-standing known to be considering a move would be the subject of a passionate entreaty from Dennis not to leave the family; a personal plea doubtless prompted by the thought of a rival not only being perceived as superior but also poking Dennis in the eye by winning the tug-of-war.Rons caring attitude often spread beyond the team, as F1 journalists in medical and financial difficulties will attest even though Dennis would not be in favour of broadcasting his unprompted generosity. Such genuine and spontaneous kindness sums up the contradiction behind the methods needed to become the most successful team boss in the sports history. It is the conundrum of a colossus. So very Ron Dennis. Cheap NFL Jerseys Authentic . Venable doubled twice Thursday, raising his career average at Milwaukees home ballpark to .394. The San Diego centre fielder also made a key catch in preserving the Padres 10-8 win over the Brewers. After the Brewers scored five times in the seventh inning, Norichika Aoki came up with two outs and runners on second and third. Right before the play, Padres coach Dave Roberts shifted Venable. Aoki had homered earlier. "I knew it was going to be close," Venable said. "Dave had just moved me about four more steps over, so if he hadnt done that, it would not have been close. Two more inches and I dont think I have a play." Carlos Quentin and Jesus Guzman homered for the Padres, who collected 16 hits. Edinson Volquez (8-8) worked into the sixth inning. Huston Street, the Padres seventh pitcher, closed for his 18th save in 19 tries. Volquez ran his career record to 22-8 against teams from NL Central. "I was in Cincinnati for four years, I pretty much know those guys," Volquez said. "I was here in the same division. It is nothing new." Volquez gave up six hits and three runs in 5 1-3 innings, while walking three and striking out five. "Edinson did a nice job early in the game," San Diego manager Bud Black said. "I thought he was throwing the ball well. He was really utilizing the curveball and changeup. He was making his pitches." Volquez knows he and his team might not have picked up the win if it wasnt for Venables defensive gem. "It was an unbelievable catch. He saved the game right there," Volquez said. The brief outing marked the second time in his last five starts that Gallardo lasted fewer than four innings. "Its definitely frustrating, especially coming after the start I had against the Marlins," Gallardo said. Quentin hit a sacrifice fly in the first, then hit a two-run homer in the third. Yonder Alonso doubled and scored in the third and added a two-run double in the fourth for a 6-0 lead. Yuniesky Betancourt homered in the Milwaukee fourth and Carlos Gomez connected in the sixth. The Padres got four runs in the seventh for a 10-3 lead, capped by Guzmans two-run pinch-hit homer. Milwaukee rallied with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Aoki homered and Caleb Gindl hit a two-run double.
